[00:00:00] Speaker A: Foreign. [00:00:05] Speaker B: Hutch talking about 49er Seahawks, Week 5 in a game that, as I thought on Sunday, impossible to kind of get your bearings with all the nonsense that was happening in that contest, all of the information that was being thrown at us by the second. There was not a dull second in that game. And then watching it with nothing but dull seconds. The all 22. Kind of a tough watch, but a very interesting watch at that. Jake. [00:00:33] Speaker A: Yeah, in so many ways, like, it was a defensive. It's funny because people will box score watch, but not actually box score watch, because box score will tell you the offenses didn't dominate, but they'd be like high scoring. But it was like. I think it was like 38 of those points were like as a result of a turnover. [00:00:49] Speaker B: Right. [00:00:51] Speaker A: Or sometimes special teams, which. Which we will talk about another major factor in this game. Yep, we'll get into all of that. But yeah, I think what astounded me most was how well the 49ers were able to run the ball. Just doing some, like, some of their staple stuff with like, inside and outside zone. [00:01:11] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:01:12] Speaker A: I thought it was going to be like more of a counter game than it was. And part of that was, I think Leonard Williams wasn't 100%. But Seattle was a little bit more vulnerable in the run game than I expected. [00:01:23] Speaker B: You know, watching it back. Yes, they were functional in the run game. It did not feel in the moments of the game. And this is why it's important to have the broadcast and then. Or, you know, be at the game and then the all 22, because there's a feel to it. There's a pacing, there's a rhythm, there's a momentum. And I know that that's not a real thing, but you tell that to a defensive lineman who's been out on the field for a long time, and now the 49ers are leaning on him a little bit, and vice versa. The ability of the 49ers to run the ball with some success, and I know some of the success rates in this game were like off the charts, but then you watch it and you're like, I don't know if that was particularly successful, but they were able to get a little bit of push up front, which is more than we expected. Seattle is still pretty flipping awesome on. [00:02:11] Speaker A: I mean, they got. They got 10 runs. I mean, the charting is iffy, but like 10 for 62 on outside zone. [00:02:17] Speaker B: Yeah, it didn't feel like they were doing what they wanted with that. It felt like they were. And this was the case last year, a block or two away consistently, and that's. But every run plays down. [00:02:29] Speaker A: But they were able to stay on track for most of the game, except for the one drive that was like sneaky kind of their M.O. not even sneaky. It was the most important drive of the game. The Evans drive. [00:02:40] Speaker B: Yeah, the Mike Evans drive, which probably [00:02:42] Speaker A: spend 25 straight minutes on in a sec. [00:02:45] Speaker B: But like, can I quickly make the case on that? That that was the only good drive that the Niners had? [00:02:51] Speaker A: Yeah, like, you can make only like complete offensive drive. Like they had moments, but yeah, only truly good offensive drive. [00:02:57] Speaker B: It was the only one where they had any explosive plays. It was the only one where they were consistently moving the chains and stuff wasn't breaking down. Yeah, there was a penalty, but like, it didn't burn them. And there was some weird stuff on that drive beyond that. But at the end of the game when they were able to run it into field goal position, I will hear the argument that that was a good drive. Watching the plays back, you're like, oh, man. I mean, I can't really explain what's happening here other than McCaffrey and Black [00:03:25] Speaker A: just go hard or effective in the past game at any point. [00:03:29] Speaker B: No, no. Brock was. It never synced up to where Brock got the protection and guys were open or if Brock got the protection, guys didn't get open. And then on the Mike Evans play, he just said, well, I guess I'm going to throw it that way. [00:03:43] Speaker A: I'm just going to throw it to Mike. Connor Colby getting torched, Getting Greg Dorched all game. [00:03:52] Speaker B: The good name of Greg Dorch. [00:03:54] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:03:54] Speaker B: Connor Colby had one of the worst pass protection games that I can imagine. I think everyone saw that coming. I just didn't expect it to be like Murphy again and again and again. [00:04:06] Speaker A: I think what is why I bring up the run game is like last time they played, last couple times they played, they couldn't move run the ball at all. Like they were in like negatives on like second and 12 losing yards. And so to get four and five and six and occasionally like eight, especially where I was worried about Colby specifically. But they also just said, Trent is so goddamn dominant, we're going to run behind Trent as the most obvious suggestion of all time. They also had some runs that didn't come off where they're like, let's run it behind Brandon Cooks and Jordan Watkins and shocker, that one didn't work out. Kyle had some. [00:04:40] Speaker B: Kyle had some weird ones. And it was. There's so Many directions I can go off of that. The. The. They ran duo a couple times in this game. That's something that, when you watch the Seahawks, you went, oh, they're actually kind of susceptible to duo. [00:04:56] Speaker A: I mean, they did run counter a few times, but not nearly as much of a really, like, sparingly. [00:05:03] Speaker B: And it was. It wasn't clean. It's clear that they're. [00:05:06] Speaker A: None of it was clean. Anything where it was like, Braden Willis was involved was pretty bad. Yeah. Because he. All he and feral. Like, I thought Farrell's been good and was, like, not terrible in this game by any stretch. But, like, there's no. I don't think Willis knows what he's doing, like, on any given play. Like, doesn't seem like he's able to find the assignment or his head is oriented the wrong way. And if he's working with another tight end, it's hard to tell who's right because they're both. They're. Someone's wrong. And it. There's just a lot of that where it looks uncomfortable and it doesn't look like he knows what he's doing. [00:05:38] Speaker B: Also very bizarre. A critical third and one. I think it was the penultimate drive of the game. And they're like, let's get Braden Willis in there at fullback. It's like, you literally didn't spend all game doing this. Like, he's your backup fullback, and you're like, we're going to teach Luke Farrell how to be a fullback this week because we don't trust him. And then third and one chance to, like, it didn't. It didn't burn him because he made the field goal, but, like, chance to really put the game on ice and not give Seattle a chance to have two plays there at the end that. That could have gone either way. And they're like, third and one. Let's run it right behind Brendel and Colby and Braden Willis and how'd that go? It was not a good Kyle game. They got to take that. The screen game stuff was bizarre. It's like, are you not familiar with Witherspoon and Eman Worry they're right there [00:06:25] Speaker A: where, like, Kittle gets picked up out of the backfield. [00:06:27] Speaker B: He. [00:06:28] Speaker A: He also, like, knows he can't push off, but he also should have come toward the ball a little close, kiddo. Kittle didn't have a. He did have some. He was better in the blocking game. I will say there was. He was one where he got out in space. It was awesome. [00:06:41] Speaker B: There were a couple where you look at it and you go, if you just run it behind Kittle there, you're, you're. You got an explosive run. And McCaffrey and Black didn't see it. But I think that was the biggest thing. Everyone in the 49ers backfield against Seattle was like, I don't trust any, any of this. Brock, again, the height thing is real. Not many teams, if only one can truly make it a problem for him, maybe Minnesota. We'll see. But the hype thing was real to where there are some guys that are open. I mean, Seattle was almost exclusively in zone or cover two, man. To where there's stuff over the middle that you can get guys into. And there were guys just kind of sitting in zone waiting for the ball to get to him. But Brock could not see them, did not trust them to like 50, 50 ball it. And then again, it's because it's zone. He doesn't have that much opportunity to run around and make something happen down the field with his legs. And then I thought, I thought Black looked really good in his limited reps. It didn't always work out for him in front, but my God, when he gets the ball in his hands, it is zero to 100 miles per hour fast. He's like an EV back there. And then McCaffrey just didn't have a feel in this game at all, which I understand it's very difficult. [00:07:52] Speaker A: I don't think he was. I think that's probably fair. I. I don't know to say, to say that he didn't have a feel at all. But like, he was way like that, where they had that screen and they could have like blown. Blown it open right where Brendel's out in front, punies out in front and then cuts it inside. [00:08:08] Speaker B: Yeah, it's. [00:08:10] Speaker A: I see what Brenda was going for, which is that like, okay, if we break this outside, punies got this guy and we're fine, and then McCaffrey cuts it inside. They were both wrong. It was just like at least for that to be a four yard gain. That should have been like 20. [00:08:25] Speaker B: Well, there's a lot. That's the thing. There's a lot of. There was a lot of that in this, where it's like we got four, so it's not a bad play. But boy, if you just had. And it's so easy for me to say, I don't have the Seattle defense coming in on me, but like, if there was just a modicum of pacing, if there was just a modicum of feel, if There was just a modicum of trust. The lanes opened up to where you could get it, but they just ran right into the back of the line. It was like watching every. Every guy in the 49ers backfield was like Brian Robinson in this game. That's what it looked like. Is it bad? Not particularly, but is it. [00:09:00] Speaker A: I don't know. [00:09:00] Speaker B: Unless it's Seattle. [00:09:01] Speaker A: It's a one off that they could get any yardage on Seattle consistently and that they were as effective. I was more impressed by the run game, it sounds like, than you are. [00:09:09] Speaker B: Yes, but. But again with the caveat of they were running, like basic zone concepts. I mean, they ran split zone a bunch. Like these are day one installs. And it's the stuff that I would have thought. It feels like, okay, the 49ers can feel good about their run game because they did have good runs in that game off of very basic stuff. And I think Mike McDonald feels okay about it coming out of this game because he's like, yeah, we take away zone runs, like, they didn't break anything. Everything stayed in front of us. But both coaches at the same time are like, could have been better. Yeah, could have been better. [00:09:46] Speaker A: They've shut that down where the 49ers haven't even stayed on track. And I think that, again, it didn't end up making a massive difference because a lot of it was just dictated by field position and right. And that's how they got a lot of scores and a weird play to Evans here or there. But I do think it was notable and it made it feel less like Seattle was smothering them in. In every facet like they have in their last couple meetings. [00:10:12] Speaker B: I'll give you that. I'll give you that. They definitely came out, the offensive line definitely came out in the run game saying, we're not getting bullied today. We might get thrown around a lot. [00:10:20] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:10:21] Speaker B: But we gotta. We gotta come with some extra punch. And we can't play the angles game. We gotta throw a little bit more weight around. [00:10:26] Speaker A: And by the way. Yeah, I mean, obviously without juice, there's no 21 or 22 personnel, but, like, they. They were terrible in 13 personnel. [00:10:35] Speaker B: Oh, it was a waste. It was a waste of snaps. [00:10:38] Speaker A: Seven plays for, like, a negative, negative one EPA per play, which is horrific. [00:10:43] Speaker B: Like, and by the way, all of that in the run game, because they did have, I believe, the Evans touchdown slant, the first touchdown. That was also in 13 personnel, where it was an RPO. And Brock said, we don't need Any of that crap. Mike Evans is one on one over there. [00:10:57] Speaker A: There. It's so funny how little Brock trusts. And it's funny people like, what about Jordan Watkins? It's like, look at how. What Brock thinks of Jordan Watkins, right? There was a play where it was like the same. I think earlier in the drive, Evans had like a wrap in. That was pretty important. And Brock goes, I'm going to throw a contested 5 yarder to George Kittle because I don't trust Jordan Watkins. Like, I don't trust that that's actually there. And it's also like, you know, that was just a good read. I think it was palms read by Pritchett that Brock threw it late and that was on him. [00:11:31] Speaker B: Yeah, like there's a question. It's technically Kathy coverage. Brady had it right in there to where it's. The safety takes over. But yes, it's. It's the basic principle of palms where you're handing stuff off based on the first and the second right. [00:11:41] Speaker A: Number two. Number two breaks out and underneath. So he takes that. [00:11:46] Speaker B: It was beautifully executed. And if you're. But like, yeah, go ahead. [00:11:49] Speaker A: I'm just saying, like anything with cowing and. And Watkins, he's just like, I don't think it's really there. [00:11:58] Speaker B: No, no, he doesn't. He does not have a feel for those guys. And when things are moving fast on defense as they are want to do in the NFL in 26, he's like, okay, do I trust that if this ball is not as this is a very complicated way of saying, like, do I really want to try that and really want to try it part. I mean, you can even feel it. There was that early third down conversion to cowing where the play is just get it to count. Everyone's going to clear out and cowing is going to sit and we know they're going to be in this zone. And it was a perfect play call. And Brock is looking at it and goes, is that Jacob? God damn it. I guess I'll throw it. [00:12:34] Speaker A: I think he sees it. And then he's like, just really? I think he pumped a little just to get it a quarter second of space. And he's like, all right, I guess we'll do this. [00:12:42] Speaker B: I don't know. And then that, I guess is rewarded in. Okay, well, we have Kathy coverage. Bob coverage. Whatever you want on this side. I guess I'll throw it to Cowing. Like Kyle gave cowing a vote of confidence after the punt return. Said he did nice things on offense. I can kind of see that because it was a nice little sit in third down and he did do some nice clear out routes. But I would like to see, easy for me to say, I don't know, maybe some offensive pass interference on that. Maybe start playing some db. When you see that Pritchett is running directly in front of you and you're not even touching him, come back to the ball. Air of commission as opposed to the air of omission of oh, he caught the ball but it was in front of the sticks. Yeah, well he had to go get it. He had to go get it in order to get in the way or at least break it up or you know, penalty, whatever. But you can't have that turnover there. That's what Sam Darnold does. [00:13:33] Speaker A: Two things to lead us into the Evans drive in the Evans game, which I think it just was. One, does Christian Kirk exist? [00:13:45] Speaker B: It's. It's pretty wild. I will, I will get to that in a half second. Just to note that on Monday's conference call Matt Barrows aptly asked because apparently Garrett Wallow got injured in this game or got injured at some point on Sunday or in the the proceeding. [00:14:00] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:14:01] Speaker B: Which is why Duggar got moved to weak side linebacker upon Dre Greenlaw's ejection. We'll leave that as it is. But when Barrow's asked like hey don't you have a linebacker that you just drafted in the third round last year? Like can't you what's he doing? He just had a hamstring injury. It's week six of the NFL year. [00:14:18] Speaker A: Like that feels like the Nick is progressing. He's like, oh, I thought you were asking about both. So Nick Martin. No idea. I don't know. [00:14:25] Speaker B: Didn't. Hasn't thought about him. I don't think about you at all. If that ain't a lot to I don't know what is that said Cam Latu might have been called into, you know, might be called into action at some point. They might have to use them. Yeah, I did think Duggar was exceptional to to your point on Christian Kirk doesn't sound good. I mean I don't know. The guy's been running on the side for months. Literally months. [00:14:47] Speaker A: But Kyle didn't really sound like he's coming back this or next week. Sounds like after the buy which is like now you have Mike Evans, Jacob Cowing and Jordan Watkins and Malik Turner. Yeah, Malik Turner. I love Malik Turner. Malik Turner is going to have to [00:15:06] Speaker B: like the place far too alive. It actually should slow down A little bit. Oh, you have Brandon Cooks too, right, Right. [00:15:14] Speaker A: Forgot Brandon Cooks. Who's seek suddenly the number two in this offense. Like, Truly. [00:15:20] Speaker B: That doesn't seem great, Jake. [00:15:22] Speaker A: It wouldn't be. But here's my next question before we get in. What's this team's record without Mike Evans? Two and three. [00:15:30] Speaker B: Oh, that's a great question. I mean, that the. I think they probably win the Rams game. He was pretty awesome in that game. They might lose to the Cardinals. [00:15:45] Speaker A: They beat the Dolphins for sure. [00:15:47] Speaker B: For sure. That goes with. [00:15:49] Speaker A: I think they get at least two guaranteed that Denver game. There's no chance they win this game without Mike Evans. [00:15:55] Speaker B: I mean, not even. [00:15:57] Speaker A: They might get blown out in this game. [00:15:59] Speaker B: It's tamed. That's some tame take stuff, right? Like, I mean, the only thing that truly put Seattle on their back heels at all was just Mike Evans 50. 50 balls a la the Juwan Jennings 24, 25 offense, which is just give it to you one. It's. It's. It's less than ideal. But again, I think a lot of folks, especially when that game looked like it was turning in the second half and the Niners are giving everything back and you know, you start to see some of the conversation on the Everything app and yeah, I think it was a lot of concern. And listen, it's all reactionary. We're being reactionary in the moment. Stuff's happening. But in that, I think a lot of people are like, oh, man, it feels like the air is coming out of the Niners hype balloon. And it's like, now Seattle games are a totally separate thing. That's like the Red River Shootout or that is a rivalry game of the highest order at the NFL level. That is a matchup that always brings the weird. Clearly we can't predict it, but nobody could possibly predict what happens in those games. Nothing is ever going back to Russ Wilson. Voodoo, magic. Like, this stuff is not normal. And in all of that, I just feel like, okay, you got the win. That's all that matters. And literally every detail beyond that. And we'll talk about all the details, of course, but like, every detail beyond that, kind of unimportant. I only. The only macro that I truly take away is I. I think that this defense isn't just fine. I think it is actually very, very good. Watching it back. Yeah, like, there was a. There was a. That question was in the back of my head. I don't understand how they're doing it. And I'm charting everything and I'm Watching it is so much fun to watch. [00:17:50] Speaker A: It's so. A few things, I think. One, Malik Mustafa was a menace to the world. Surprisingly good, astoundingly good. Had, I think, like, one whiff, but like, one of the highest charted players for both of us. Jair took the bait but didn't get attacked enough and made a couple good plays. He did as usual. Yes. [00:18:16] Speaker B: But diamond or Lenore had a bad day and I think everyone else, like, covered themselves in glory. [00:18:20] Speaker A: I think. I think Raheem has done a. A phenomenal job of protecting the young corners. I still consider Lenore a young corner because he's still, like, he's not that [00:18:29] Speaker B: young anymore, but, like, the second year on the outside. [00:18:31] Speaker A: Yeah, I think he's. I don't know. I think he's kind of an immature guy. That's probably harsh, but, like, he might. [00:18:38] Speaker B: Regardless, he still plays as if he's in the slot sometimes. And there's. [00:18:43] Speaker A: Yeah, there's. There's some times where I. Yeah, his. That. That's what it is. His, like, foundation is in the slot. And there. There's some things. Yes. So I think a little bit of [00:18:51] Speaker B: Jack Jones in him. There's a little bit of just like, get me in there, Tasmanian Devil. [00:18:55] Speaker A: And I think Raheem's done a tremendous job of coaching those guys on their job and how to communicate and pass stuff off, which they struggled with last year. They were all uncomfortable last year. They were. They weren't at each other, each other's throats because it was directed in a different direction. Coughs and bob like, they're. They. The secondary wasn't happy last year with how things were coordinated. And clearly there's a level of comfort. Raheem also, I'm forgetting his. His assistant, who has been a longtime coach with him. [00:19:24] Speaker B: I got three hours, whatever. [00:19:26] Speaker A: I think Gray. [00:19:28] Speaker B: Yes, yes, yes, yes. [00:19:29] Speaker A: He's come. He's come along with him. I think they dictated very clearly, like, terminology, assignment, how to pass things off. I think that's fundamental. I think Fred has been phenomenal. Was truly phenomenal in this game. What they've done with Jaden Duggar, who, by the way, like, wow, again, not a fan of coming out of the draft. I thought there was a. Like, I was pretty astounded. Thought the hype train was out of control, which it was based on what he was putting on tape. But he was tremendous in this game. [00:19:56] Speaker B: Like, he was. He looked. He looked on par with Fred Warner in this game. [00:20:02] Speaker A: Now, I wouldn't go that far. No. Okay. Because I assignments but he was tremendous. [00:20:06] Speaker B: Both of those guys had moments where they got caught in conflict. And Fred Warner, it's because he's over processing sometimes, you know, he thinks he can get it all done and he kind of gets caught a little bit flat footed. And there were some nice concepts in the past game from Flurry when they'd throw it over and then hit the flat. But with Duggar it was. I've never played this position before and so. Okay. [00:20:29] Speaker A: Got off blocks before blocks got to him, which was a major concern for us. [00:20:33] Speaker B: Unbelievable. [00:20:33] Speaker A: Really, really impressive. [00:20:35] Speaker B: KJ writes work in miracles. I mean I don't want to take anything away from Jaden Duggar because along the we were. I'll speak for myself. I know that you agree with most of this, but I don't want to lump you in on all of it. Yeah. When you watch ULL tape, when you find Georgetown football tape and you can't find him. [00:20:55] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:20:56] Speaker B: Unless you are really hyper locating, you can't see him on the tape because he's not playing all that often. And when he is playing, he's not making plays. It was. [00:21:08] Speaker A: He was a pick on. On athleticism and spec in size and, and they, they must have seen some stuff. [00:21:15] Speaker B: Well, the flashes were high. Right. And that's why everyone got hyped because people who only do this via YouTube are like, look at this five minute cut up. [00:21:22] Speaker A: This guy's making a Lucas. That little. He dipped, just dipped his shoulder. By the way, the ghost man I've ever seen. [00:21:28] Speaker B: Abe and Cross had bad games. In fact, I don't know if anyone on the Seattle offensive line had a good game which speaks to the defensive [00:21:34] Speaker A: line quite a few times. A few times they looked like in trouble on the offensive line. [00:21:40] Speaker B: Like they were over pulling too. Like they were doing stuff like they were running into each other on gap stuff. For a John Benton offensive line to look that way was jarring. Which I. We know what John Benton is. So that's a Raheem Morris thing like that is he had John Benton in hell off of osa, you know, OSA Digizua and just the. [00:22:02] Speaker A: The extendable was a. I mean that was a tremendous, tremendous game for him. [00:22:09] Speaker B: You remember the comp that we had for Grayson Holton coming out. [00:22:11] Speaker A: He. His. [00:22:12] Speaker B: His high end is Malik Collins with the Browns last year. His low end is Malik Collins with the 49ers. That was Malik Collins with the Browns. That's exactly. Just get out of my way. [00:22:22] Speaker A: He. I mean the explosion and, and here's the Thing, Like, a lot of the concern I had from him was like, he was asked to sort of like, round the edge as a rusher and he could never do that. And it was like, so if you can keep him in a straight line, like, he's also anchoring way better than I think he did in college where he flashed it. But college is tough. Especially was, you know, like, he's playing at Oklahoma. Like, there's some weird stuff. [00:22:47] Speaker B: Big 12 is weird. [00:22:48] Speaker A: The Big 12. I just don't like or trust anything about those defenses. And so you're trying to speculate and imagine what he's going to be like, but then he gets to the Niners and you're like, that's kind of a hand in glove fit. Like, if any team. [00:22:59] Speaker B: Yeah. I mean, the joke that I put in the column on the draft grades, when I gave it an A, I gave Dugger a D. We're doing full disclosure here. It's all very public. [00:23:07] Speaker A: We didn't like it. [00:23:09] Speaker B: We didn't like that pick. And I didn't. I could foresee a circum. I didn't give it an F because he was so athletic. You're like, I don't know, you give him two years, you might mold him into something and he could be a really good special teamer. And if you only have him as a Sam linebacker instead of Luke Gifford in the short term, like, and that's asking a lot of. That's asking a lot. But, like, even if that's like what you have to throw them out to, like, I liked him better than I like Nick Martin the year before, just because Nick Martin had no projectability, whereas at least Duggar is nothing but projectability. But then I didn't see any tape. And so for him to do some of the things that he was doing in that game where again, as you noted, like, keeping his shoulders square, sifting [00:23:49] Speaker A: through navigating space also in coverage, like, like being on it and just, just like occupying a zone and getting to the right depth, which is like, frankly, not the easiest thing to do. [00:24:01] Speaker B: No. [00:24:02] Speaker A: Like, he was. [00:24:02] Speaker B: Most linebackers don't do it. [00:24:04] Speaker A: I was impressed. I was really, really impressed. [00:24:06] Speaker B: I was, I was. My jaw dropped. Like, there were a couple plays where I'm like, I don't want to. You know, you don't want to flip it the other way around. Because all the things that we said on his tape in college are. Was my well researched full opinion. And again, we never undercut the possibility that the athleticism was there. But for him to go from what that was last year to this now is legitimately, like, incomprehensible to me. And it is a. You know, along with Denzel Boston, like, another reason why just tape doesn't tell the full story. And if you're on day three in this draft, good idea to take some shots. [00:24:49] Speaker A: Also, we've given the 49ers a lot of understandably for the way they draft because they, like, defer to coaches. But this is a situation especially. And it works better later in drafts, even though George Kittle. Right. But, like, this is a situation where you're, like, trusting a position coach who's like, I actually know exactly what to do with him. And if it works out, you look like a genius. If it doesn't, you look like you're doing the Nick. But again, Nick Martin, you haven't reconsidered. No one would have had a problem. If it was like, round five, you would have been like, okay. We would have still had criticisms, but it's like, okay, round five. I see it. Pick 75 is like, what are we doing? [00:25:23] Speaker B: Yeah. No, that. That's somebody. The top 100 pick has to have a role on a team in week one. And it's like, I can't even see this guy being a special teamer. [00:25:29] Speaker A: I want. Yeah. I want to return to the front real quick. [00:25:32] Speaker B: Like, apologize. Yes. [00:25:33] Speaker A: Yeah. Halton had a stuff on. On Lucas, on Zabel had a sack on Cross had a pressure that affected a screen the strip and recover before the sack. Phenomenal. Keon White was all over the place. Does the thing where. And I think part of the interesting thing with stunts is, like, the idea, right, is to, like, have someone pick to free up the other guy. But frequently what happens is there's this, like, you go in between them, and you're attacking both players, and so they'll both turn, and then the pick player ends up getting free. And Keon White does that really well, where he just wins and splits both and so no one is getting blocked. He did that at least, like, twice in this game. And again, we said it up front. Like, you put pressure on Darnold and you disguise anything in the back end. Like, they put. They rotated Mustafa down. I think it was cover one on that first Renard. [00:26:27] Speaker B: There's a lot of. There was a lot of rotating down cover one especially. [00:26:30] Speaker A: But, like, stuff that was coordinated and well thought out in a way. Like, like I said it, you had a different term for. I said, like, intent versus inquiry. Like, Bob last year was like, Inquiring and like, maybe let's try some stuff and see how it goes. Raheem is like, I'm going to run, like, cover six, and we're going to be very clear about when we use man coverage and how we're going to rotate and how we're going to blitz. And it all feels very intentional and well designed to say we're going to attack a weak offensive line and we're going to put pressure against Darnold. I don't think they blitzed actually that much. [00:27:04] Speaker B: No, they show. They show it a lot, but they didn't. They didn't actually need it. [00:27:09] Speaker A: And it feels like a defense that's actually coordinated is I think, what I'm trying to say. [00:27:14] Speaker B: Well, and a defense that also has some really exceptional players. Somehow they have. Somehow their defensive line looks like one of the better units in the NFL that week. And I listen. Seattle's offensive line had a really bad day. That's not like a terrible offensive line. That's not like we're running out there. [00:27:31] Speaker A: Made me think it might be like, right. [00:27:35] Speaker B: So again, like, we understand coming in, you're like, that's not a bad. It's not great offensive line, but it's not a bad offensive line. And the Niners are whooping their ass. So what does that say about the first off, the coordination, which we'll keep speaking to, but also the quality of the players in there and so, like, even go through, like. I thought Naquan Jones had some really nice reps in this game. Again, I don't understand. We're not. I'm not even going to do the PFF thing. Yeah, Keon White was exceptional. That's his finest game as a 49er. I don't have a full, comprehensive understanding of his time with the Patriots, but I'm having a hard time imagining a game where he was ever more impactful than that. He was everywhere and he. He was immense. [00:28:13] Speaker A: Mike. [00:28:13] Speaker B: Hell, also. Yeah, go ahead. [00:28:15] Speaker A: I. Well, I want to get to Mikel in two seconds, but just to off your point, they had one where White got a sack because they have this perfect balance of, like, height as, like, a pure speed guy. [00:28:27] Speaker B: Excellent. [00:28:27] Speaker A: And Mikel closes the other edge. Osa, who's just like, bull. Pressure is like, getting home, where it's like an actually, like a really nice balance of the types of rushers that they have. And then White, who actually gets, like, stonewalled for once, where the last guy is responsible to stay there, he gets the sack because Darnold gets Flushed. And now Mikel. [00:28:51] Speaker B: It felt like Mikel was bigger on the broadcast than actually when you watch the all 22. There were a couple plays where first off, there were two really exceptional plays where he recognizes a screen and blows it up. That's really high level stuff. He didn't lose an edge, but maybe once in this entire game. And that was kind of. [00:29:09] Speaker A: I think he had one. One bad play. I noted in the run game, maybe two. [00:29:15] Speaker B: He's a force multiplier. And he. He allows a guy like Romello height to be Romello height. And Romello height was exceptional. [00:29:24] Speaker A: He allows starting to cook and he's got a club on his hand. [00:29:27] Speaker B: Yeah, there's really something there because Charles Cross, listen, he is the better of the two, and I wouldn't put him up there with anybody, but, like, the left. The left side of that Seattle offensive line was looking pretty ace going into that game, and they looked like dog water. [00:29:45] Speaker A: Like I said, Cross was gettable, but, like, he looked. [00:29:48] Speaker B: Everyone's getable except right. [00:29:49] Speaker A: But like, he got got. [00:29:51] Speaker B: By the way, with Trent, I do think that this is now something we're gonna see. I don't. There's. I'm certain there's a term for it. I'll ask somebody about it. I haven't had the time, but Seattle would bring, you know, basically a mug effectively on the edge, and then they kind of would like, jump. They'd kind of fake in and then go out. And that kind of messed up the Colby Trent pass pro a bunch. And it's not. It's to where Trent was like, oh, I don't have anyone to block. Let me go help Colby. But it would. It would screw up the. It would screw up the protections a little bit. And there were a couple where it was like, almost like a stutter step in. And I think that we're going to see that more because they want to get one on ones with Colby. If Trent doesn't have that guy coming in and at least faking it for a second, he's like, well, I'll just go double team this guy. That's the end. [00:30:43] Speaker A: Should they just have. Should they just have it where it's like a slide and Colby pulls to left tackle like. Like the tiniest poll of all time? Yeah, I don't know what you would call that. There's always a name for everything. [00:30:56] Speaker B: I'm sure that service academy did it. It's the Colby. The Colby thing is. Is really concerning to the point where I might. If it happens again, obviously not to this level because Seattle is Seattle. But if it happens again against the commanders, who got some pretty good dts themselves and Javon Kinlaw, it will. It will be to the point where I now put left guard very high on the list of things you need to trade for. Amongst so many things the 49ers need to trade for right now, if they can. [00:31:28] Speaker A: What do they do at receiver? Because stribling is like a two months away. That doesn't sound like Kirk's coming back. [00:31:36] Speaker B: Well, that's the weird thing about Kirk. It's like, okay, so they might be law to ing him, but, like, what was the. Like, how you signed him? He didn't participate. Like, did OTAs. Damn him to the point where they're like, oh, good, he's injured and he's not. Like, that's a hell of a calf strain. Also, you just see him running all the time. Like, he's always running, but you can't. [00:31:57] Speaker A: Available. Who is Tyreek? [00:32:00] Speaker B: Yeah, well, according to a certain court documents in the state of Florida, I would not bother with that. [00:32:06] Speaker A: Yeah. Oh, no Civil case, though. Yeah. [00:32:10] Speaker B: I mean, the Juwan Jennings conversation will increase. I'm not sure Juwan Jennings gives this team what it really needs, but it might be a nice stopgap in that first off, kind of expensive. Second, like, oh, great. Another guy who can't separate, but at least Brock will throw the ball to, like, that's. That's the cop. That's all you're doing. I don't think Jerry Judy works, but I'm now way more Jerry Judy curious than I've ever been. And I don't like Jerry Judy at all. Didn't like him coming out. Didn't like it. Don't get it. Don't get it. But you know what? At this point, this team should be willing to explore anything. And it sucks because this upcoming draft is so good. You don't want to touch any of that. And now you're in a position where there are so few teams that are overtly selling, that have anything to sell that you. As we just saw with with Marv. Like, I'm sorry, did that say a second rounder for a guy who's put out the worst tape of maybe anybody in the NFL this year. So of all that, like, now you're at. Now you're having to dip into what could be a foundational draft class to where you're picking in, like, the 2002 and you feel better than you were picking at 70 last year, and you're now having to Take good quality picks from that class to go get a Jerry Judy. Like I don't love that but you got to do what you got to do at the same time. [00:33:26] Speaker A: Yeah, I'm trying to think who's available. I'm like, I'm like who's washed that is basically free. Like could you like Calvin Ridley? Does that make maybe. [00:33:38] Speaker B: Yeah, that honestly feels. That's been brought up before in conversations. Like that feels like the most appropriate play. Like it might not work, but like that at least has some upside to it. Like how are we supposed to know if. If he's any good still or not? Because Brian Dables, the offensive coordinator there, by the way, he's. He's doing wonderfully. Can we talk about Mike Evans though? Sorry, I took us way off track. [00:34:03] Speaker A: Let's talk about Mike Evans. One perhaps the greatest two week stretch I've ever seen from a 49ers receiver over last five years based on pure guts and tact and just gamer ship like. [00:34:19] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. It was to the point where last night I sent you a seven minute video of Randy Moss. [00:34:25] Speaker A: We're watching Randy Moss. [00:34:28] Speaker B: It's not Randy Moss, but it is. He is doing Moss like things. [00:34:33] Speaker A: Here's what I said. Well, what prompted as I said, he might just be the greatest I've ever seen to not look like the greatest I've ever seen. Because he's not like just dominating with speed. Even the routes like aren't getting that much separation. [00:34:48] Speaker B: No, I think it was like an average of 1 yard of separation on his receptions. [00:34:52] Speaker A: He's just like any. And I think it was. Brady was clearly having fun with it. We can briefly he's gotten a lot better but like he was clearly like Mike Evans told me, like I'm open even when I'm not open. Yes. And that was like the story of the game where Josh Jobe on that, that little touchdown where Josh Job's all over him like great coverage and it's just. I don't understand also Brock like with a lot of throws that are just literally inch perfect. [00:35:18] Speaker B: Oh yeah, there was the one on the first touchdown drive of the game where pocket immediately dies and Brock rolls out to his left, does that little stop, squares his shoulders and rips one. And it was 25 yards and he could have hit the bullseye on a dart board with the throw to where the ball is out of bounds, but it's just perfectly placed so that Mike Evans while falling with his feet can get it. And you're like that is some high level Shit right there. And then you watch the rest of the 49ers pass game and you go, I would like some arsenic, please, please. Just deliver us directly into my eyes, if you would. [00:36:00] Speaker A: You know what? [00:36:00] Speaker B: It's unbelievable how good he is. [00:36:01] Speaker A: Yeah, I'm. [00:36:03] Speaker B: And that goes for both Evans and Purdy. [00:36:05] Speaker A: Yeah, I'm with you. You know what the answer at receiver might be? It might be to beat the Commanders this week and then say, hey, we're going to take your least popular receiver. Give us like Traylon Burks. [00:36:17] Speaker B: Traylon Burks has looked nice for them though. [00:36:19] Speaker A: I know, but they. [00:36:20] Speaker B: Everyone wants. Everyone wants Terry McLaurin. Terry McLaurin. They're not trading him. Like, this is the thing. It's not the NBA. I know that the wide receiver position is the most NBA adjacent, but it's not the NBA. And it's not just this rumor mill. I know that the NFL is a lot closer to the NBA in terms of player movement and stuff like that than it ever has been. I understand that the names that are being tossed out there, I mean, I earnestly mean this because I've now done it. Blockable offenses block. I never want to see anything that you have to say again. That is so deluded and algorithmically brained. It's the dumbest. What is this, a Bleacher Report article? What are we on the sleeper app and getting a push alert? Like, what are we talking about? That is not a thing that is going to happen. So go get Jalen Waddle. What? Yeah, I mean, yeah, you should. What is this? Madden with the no blocking of trade slider like. Like it is. It's absurd. Then the Niners are going to have to scour practice squads and that means they're going to have to find more old friends. By the way, a lot of their old friends have aged out of the NFL and I don't know what they're going to do, but they can take solace in the fact. [00:37:39] Speaker A: Also, every team needs a receiver because there's been so many injuries, right? [00:37:43] Speaker B: Yeah. The Niners, the only team buying. Everyone else is selling. It's quite the opposite. In fact, they could take solace in the fact that they get in order. Washington, Atlanta, the Raiders, the Cowboys. And there's a bye week in between there. Those are. I mean, what's the best defense of those four? [00:38:03] Speaker A: Let's see. [00:38:04] Speaker B: I don't even care. Again, Washington, Monday. And then absolute. If they lose a game, you know exactly why. Short week, 10:00am Atlanta, Georgia, Washington. [00:38:17] Speaker A: They might get gashed in that game. [00:38:20] Speaker B: I don't even think it. Well, who's the quarterback, by the way? [00:38:24] Speaker A: Do you just love. Isn't it incredible to just go two is going to come in and immediately throw an interception? [00:38:33] Speaker B: It was just. They. You got to give me a little bit more than that. You got to, you got to lube it up a little bit. You can't just go right in there. It was, it was hilarious. But you're also like, man, I could have used a little bit of circumstance, you know, wine and dine me a little bit to make it look really bad and then go over the top with the terrible. And instead he's just like, I don't see him at all. [00:38:58] Speaker A: It's. It's astounding. And just to. I didn't properly get a chance to appreciate just that drive with Evans. [00:39:06] Speaker B: Yes. Can we just go through it? [00:39:08] Speaker A: I mean. Yeah, like legitimately one of the wildest, most impressive drives I've ever seen. Losing his mind the entire time. Unrightfully so. Because like as much as that was like sort of a, like Brock like kind of barely got it out and it's barely a pass that pro. That shouldn't have been intentional grounding the tight end was right there. [00:39:30] Speaker B: Like, that was brutal. You could see the tight end in frame on the Fox broadcast. That zooms in like what? [00:39:35] Speaker A: And the receipt. And then, and then the, the ref next to him goes. I mean, you're right, but I'm not in charge. [00:39:42] Speaker B: I mean, also, isn't this what they do all. I mean, all the games are officiated in New York anyway. Isn't that what that's for? Right. So we just have this big delay. So I'm just going to read through the play by play with my. [00:39:53] Speaker A: That's where I'm at with it. Yeah, go for it. [00:39:54] Speaker B: Okay, so first off, first and 20. It's the first real play. [00:39:58] Speaker A: Brandon Cooks, OPI. [00:40:00] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:40:01] Speaker A: First and 20. [00:40:02] Speaker B: Yeah. And an absolute rip to Evans over the middle. Colby is on his ass. Colby is literally like Pratt falling on stage. [00:40:12] Speaker A: This is the, this is the wrap in right that he runs to. To Evans, which is. They basically ran the same play later for Watkins and Brock turned it down for a little. We'll get. [00:40:23] Speaker B: So it's just a post in onto the inside. And Brock, they did this against Denver as well. Where. And it might have been the play that got Evans injured, fully injured the week before that. So an absolute rip on this one. They get him in the slot. They did some interesting stuff with Evans lined up solo and Then bringing out like a KD or something to take away the corners and cover two man. But Job is on him like, that ball shouldn't be there. And then here comes, I believe, Okuda or Love. I forget who it is. Both of them very capable, and they're right on him. And it's double coverage, and the ball is picture perfect. Love on Evans's hands. And Evans takes a hit immediately to the ribs. Yeah, it was a kiddo motion to pull out Job on the play, though. I. I don't. I don't care for Job first off. And then second. I'm kidding. It's. It's an Arrested Development reference. [00:41:11] Speaker A: Sorry. So sorry. Sorry. [00:41:12] Speaker B: I actually like Job a tremendous amount. And I feel terrible for him legitimately because it's like, what am I supposed to do? I don't care for Job. I love all my kids equally. I don't care for Job. Just an unbelievable. And like, that sets a tone for the drive, which is. I am throwing this to Mike Evans. Mike Evans might die in the process, but we have no other choice. We are going to go win this game. [00:41:36] Speaker A: Yes. [00:41:36] Speaker B: Next play, McCaffrey up the middle for four yards. Kittle and Farrell run into each other on split zone. So we're just. [00:41:42] Speaker A: But maybe just to somehow get four. Which last two times they played that would have gone for one or two. [00:41:47] Speaker B: Fair. [00:41:47] Speaker A: So at least fair. Yeah. And then they go QB sneak, which they got two. Purdy. Purdy, I think Pumps. I think he like hard countered like four times. He's like, huh. [00:41:59] Speaker B: Okay, so they've already had a penalty. They're already in a third and one, which is their bugaboo down and distance. They get both of those things and do it. Okay, so the next one, we get Purdy to Kittle for five yards on Earnest Jones. It was actually a very nicely designed play. They get one on one. Jones and Kittle. And Kittle can't separate. Feral is all the way over outside the numbers. And you're like, this is. This is interesting. It was a force feed. They only got five yards off. A great play by Jones. [00:42:27] Speaker A: That was the one Watkins was. Was open. And Brock's like, I'm taking kill. [00:42:31] Speaker B: Not a chance. [00:42:32] Speaker A: I'm not throwing this. [00:42:33] Speaker B: Next play, Purdy nine yards to Evans. Evans just smacks Job around. He. He just. He just beats him up. By the way, still good coverage. Just man beats boy. Next play, first and 10 from the 49. Kalon Black minus four yards, but there's a penalty on Cooks for holding. But it's Declined because it was minus 4 yards. What a fill by Okeda on that play. Very Malik Mustafa coded. In fact. Terrible execution. Might have been feral. I don't know. [00:43:05] Speaker A: It was. It was terrible. It was terrible. [00:43:07] Speaker B: The whole. [00:43:07] Speaker A: The whole thing imploded and then you're. You're set up in. What is it you get second and 14. [00:43:13] Speaker B: Second and 14 and McKifitz loses so bad that the play just has no chance of ever working. So now you're in. I mean Purdy gets 4 yards on the run, but like play was absolutely shot old yellowed from the second. McKivitz took the snap because he just got absolutely wrecked. And then it's third and 10 from the 49 and it's just. What is this inside. Inside leverage. He releases inside. He does the Jacob cowing and gets away with it because Brock is like, it's going to him. Just figure out what you need to do, big boy. 23 yards. What a play. Meanstounding. Preposterous. Don't they can't teach this stuff. That's the fun part. Like so much of the 49ers offense is like X, Y, Z. And then we're going to get into calculus and stuff and then. And then on this drive it's like none of that shit's working. Mike. Get open. Doesn't matter how we're going to run right behind the guy. Literally give him a lane to get an interception. Let him be in front of you and we're still going to throw it anyway. He must him next play is the intentional grounding. Eman Warri is pretty awesome, but that was quite silly. Quite silly in all regards. And then the next play, Brock and we talk about emotional blitzing. That's like a Nate Tyson like the emotional blitzing where it's oh, we just got burned. We're going to throw seven at you. This was Brock doing an emotional nine route where he's like, that was a bullshit call, Mike. [00:44:43] Speaker A: You run that way and that's, that's the play that I was like, I thought would be there throughout the game, but only for Evans because they don't have anyone else to run it. [00:44:52] Speaker B: Where, yeah, deep shots to the boundary. That's the way you can get Seattle. [00:44:55] Speaker A: But if you have the guy wrote up and Evans said, okay, job is smaller, I'll just go get it. [00:45:00] Speaker B: I mean it. It usually on that throw and we saw that throw earlier on that Evans touchdown. Forgive me if back to back home three home games in a row. But if it was the. Was it The Arizona game where Brock threw it in there and then Mike Evans, like, didn't even move his hands. It was just right there for him. It was very Jerry Rice. We've seen that play, right? Like a 9 route to Mike Evans is now a staple of this offense. That was not, like, placed perfectly in the bread basket. It was a great throw. But Evans goes up completely, turns his body, catches it above his head and comes down. And there was a second where I'm like, oh, he might be able to turn around with it. And that's where the Randy Moss stuff comes into play. It's like, no, people don't do that. [00:45:41] Speaker A: That's not legitimately just astounding to watch. [00:45:44] Speaker B: JSN kind of had a similar catch, the famous drop, kind of a similar thing where it's like a great ball has to turn your body has to make it. And he couldn't pull it off. [00:45:54] Speaker A: Well, it was. It was also. It looked like they were on a different page where Darnold, he was running flat because it looked like a bench concept where he was flattening out. Darnold let him. Which Darnold was off in quite a few ways. [00:46:08] Speaker B: Right. [00:46:08] Speaker A: Like, it's. [00:46:09] Speaker B: It's just. Can you make that play as a wide receiver? Mike Evans didn't. JSN didn't. And we'll talk about Malik Mustafa in a second. But I have a little inkling that it might have had something to do with that. The tight end chip release screen where Colby just. It's is in the backfield. [00:46:28] Speaker A: Was that the one where Iman War is all over that? [00:46:31] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. There was nothing. I think Jones and E. Manwari actually, man, where I missed the tackle, so it was able to get 2 yards, but it was like, what are you doing? He's right there. They drafted this guy for this play. [00:46:43] Speaker A: It was. It was there. And there was no way to win that. It was just like Kittle released and he's like on him. And then Kittle probably should have come back to the ball if it's the one I'm remembering correctly, but there's nothing that would have changed that. [00:46:53] Speaker B: But Brock had to get it out quickly because Colby's about to like, sit on him. And so it's like, okay, this is not developing right. I have to just get it here. Kittle will at least catch this and maybe he'll make Eman worry miss. But like, Seattle's not going to let one guy miss. And then, right, it's not Miami or Arizona. And then obviously the timeout Slant touchdown to Cooks. That's called off. Followed by. My only note is Russ Wilson. Yeah, he's Russell Wilson incarnate. [00:47:25] Speaker A: He just did that thing where he scrambles and. And it's like a sort of Russell Wilson throw where it's like a weird low one and the receiver has to go and dive and get it. And I was like, shocked that Cooks actually picked that up off the turf because most of those, you're like, the replay is like, hits chest, hits ground, traps it. Yeah, he got it clean. I mean, really, it was great. [00:47:47] Speaker B: And then what, a two point conversion? First off, they try a fade to Evans. He gets pied. Yes. But also no. Like, maybe you got to give the defense a little bit of credit for. Like, it's Mike Evans. I gotta do something here. And so then there again, in a situation, there was a lot of circumstances where. Doesn't matter your and I's opinion on it. The Niners clearly felt some comfortability in getting gains in the run game. And they're like, we're not running anything in critical situations at all because that means we'd have to bring like Braden Willis on them. We're not doing that. So it's just Purdy doing crazy stuff. And then seeing Evans have a little like, he doesn't have any space, but he does have the ability to box out and just ripping one right into his chest. It was, it was an all time drive. It was an all time drive. [00:48:36] Speaker A: I mean, it's something that is just like, that's, that's kind of like a division, conference winning drive. Like, if you look back on the story of the season, I mean, again, we're. [00:48:48] Speaker B: They're two games up on. On both the Rams and the Seahawks right now. [00:48:50] Speaker A: Pretty astounding. And the Rams should probably be one and four. Like, yeah, that. With that Philly game. [00:48:56] Speaker B: Well, also [00:49:00] Speaker A: special teams. The Shanahan tree and special team. Shanahan finally got a good special teams coordinator. [00:49:06] Speaker B: Yeah, Wash his hands of special teams. [00:49:08] Speaker A: But that was something that I wanted to talk about. Like, not to do it, not to like, put this drive under the rug because this was like truly spent 10 [00:49:16] Speaker B: minutes breaking down every play. Trust me, it's one of the most [00:49:18] Speaker A: incredible drivers ever seen. Put a point on it. [00:49:20] Speaker B: But like, special teams, but especially given the circumstances of the three scoring drives prior, had a total of 29 yards. They had 110 yards on their previous 10 drives. They couldn't move the ball. Seattle was doing whatever they wanted and the scoreboard was lying. Now it was also lying in the other direction, because the Niners defense was great and Seattle was getting away with stuff, too. But like, first off, that JSN touchdown, unbelievable. But, like, that really was the only touchdown in the game that felt earned in any capacity. And even that is just like, wow, just great player making a great play. And then on this one, they're like, we got more of that for you. Here we go. Here we go. Mike Evans, Brock Purdy, and I found Mike McDonald's comments on it interesting because first off, he's like, well, I'm not going to tell you how we do this. Second, I don't think you could understand what I'm saying if even I told you. But then also third, he's like, you know, you got to make calls and sometimes the calls don't work out because there were plays where Mike Evans had two dudes on him and he still caught the ball. Like the very first. That post, it's. There's two dudes right on him. That ball shouldn't be in there. Great quarterbacks can break up any defense, and a great wide receiver can really do some downright stupid stuff that you can't defend against. There's very few of those guys. The Niners have legitimately never had one of those guys. You can maybe make an argument that Peak Debo, in a very different way was like that with all the yak and like, yes, George Kittle can do that to a degree and obviously Christian McCaffrey can do it. But like, yeah, this is. It's different in this game where Seattle's defense is like, we don't think that you can do the basic stuff well enough. Everybody's got all these wrinkles and bells and whistles. You need to take five and seven step drop backs, stand in the pocket as we are in your grill every play, and then deliver perfect strikes 25 yards down the field. We don't think you can do that. [00:51:16] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:51:16] Speaker B: And Brock's like, yeah, I can. [00:51:18] Speaker A: By the way, Seattle tried some like, under center drop back stuff and it totally backfired. [00:51:22] Speaker B: They were too horribly right. He had two sacks on three step drop backs. [00:51:25] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:51:26] Speaker B: That's more than. It's unacceptable in high school. [00:51:29] Speaker A: Really bad right now. Yeah. [00:51:31] Speaker B: And then he. And then as you noted on Friday, then you're like, what a throw. What a majestic stallion he is. There were two where he escaped and you're like, even Brock ain't escaping that. Lamar Jackson doesn't escape that. And he somehow escaped him and made just absolute picture perfect throws. I don't Understand him. [00:51:47] Speaker A: And despite all these like turnovers that went both ways but like started going Seattle's way in the second half and really consequential moments with the cowing muff and all that. But I mean, that was the first quarter. But like in the second half they [00:51:58] Speaker B: got a lot of those interception followed by debo fumble. [00:52:02] Speaker A: Yeah. 49ers average drive started at their own 43 and a half. Seattle at their 32.7. I talked about it like with field position Weightman and by the way, that Grayson Holton play doesn't happen if Saran Neal doesn't down the ball at the 4, like legit. We talked about it. Special teams was really going to matter. And 49ers kind of, aside from cowing, I mean, they allowed that, that Shahid return. [00:52:27] Speaker B: It was even. It was even because Jordan James had [00:52:29] Speaker A: some nice returns in the punt game where it really mattered. They were not backed up against their end zone a lot of the time. They were in advantageous positions where they could sort of keep the pressure on Seattle, make them have to drive. And neither team could really pull that off. Aside from that drive we just talked [00:52:45] Speaker B: about, which again is probably extremely replicable, but probably not advisable. Just generally for Mike Evans's body's sake, like you, it's. You can maybe make an entire offense out of. Where's Mike? I'll throw the ball to Mike. I'd like to think that maybe a triple team comes at some point down the line. I can understand why Seattle's not doing that. They're Seattle. But another team might not have the same sort of confidence in themselves and just go, we're just going to triple team them and anyone else can beat us, we will leave them wide open. Luke Farrell, you will have Acres to run with. We'll see if Brock can get there. Also, the other aspect of it is you have this great coverage where everything's passed off on the back end. But again, the Seattle defensive line, just every single snap pressure. And it's not even just Connor Colby, though. It was exceptionally Connor Colby. They're getting Trent, they're getting McKivitz, left, right and center. Brendel had an up and down game, though he has been exceptional this season. Puny. Got, got plenty. Like everybody's getting got. And that's without a full health. Leonard Williams, like, it is still anyone who wants to look at that game and be like, seattle's defense ain't it, buddy? You don't know ball. You don't know ball. [00:53:50] Speaker A: Yeah. I mean, that defense is, I will say, their susceptibility to the run surprised [00:53:55] Speaker B: me a lot in this game. For sure. For sure. [00:53:58] Speaker A: Yeah, that surprised me. And I think part of that's WILLIAMS not being 100%. But, like, they got caught a few times. But, like, the coverage, like, it is really, really hard to move ball against his defense. And again, Kyle was trying to get cute sometimes. And, like, I hated the screen, you know, I think it was that third and one, like, play action. There's some, like, really ugly calls on his part. [00:54:18] Speaker B: No one was comfortable in this game. [00:54:19] Speaker A: As you said, space and passes things off so well. Yeah, like, Job was all. He was on top of Evans, like, the whole game, it just. Evans just won. [00:54:27] Speaker B: I mean, and that's the thing. It's like, well, if he had a bigger body, it's like, okay, first off, you're not gonna let Rick Wallen go, but Reek Wolin ain't in his grill like that on every snap. He doesn't have the ability to stay with him. The whole point of Reek Wolin was he has every physical trait. So the very high end, he's as good as it gets. The problem is it never shows up because he's so inconsistent. So I don't know. I thought Pritchett was really good in this game. Not that it was terribly difficult for him. Not the best game from love, but that doesn't happen very often. That Drake Thomas is a real issue for Kyle. You can tell that he doesn't know what to do with them because Thomas had McCaffrey in jail in this game. In jail. And Ernest Jones did more than I expected against Kittle in this contest. Yeah, this rematch is going to be something. It's going to be like six nothing. [00:55:19] Speaker A: It's going to be sick. I mean, just a phenomenal game. Just like legitimately awesome to watch. [00:55:25] Speaker B: Yeah, from a neutral perspective, awesome. From a sicko perspective, pretty awesome, though. Exhausting. [00:55:31] Speaker A: I also love people that, like, you know, if you say, like, well, Seattle's defense is really good. And then like 49ers, when they're like, how dare you have said that People, [00:55:41] Speaker B: they don't have to watch it the same way as us. Of course they can take it or leave. [00:55:45] Speaker A: By the way, I have two more names for you for practice squad. [00:55:51] Speaker B: It's their five zero. And this is the conversation where it's like a Dolphins podcast or something. Where it's like, that's right. What about these cast offs? But we just do this every year now. Gotten really good at understanding Practice squad rules. [00:56:06] Speaker A: Yeah, I think. I think Andrew Armstrong is still on the Chiefs practice squad. Arkansas guy. We love him. Or Nick Westbrook. Aquinay, who's just not that good, but, like, big and physical and can run in a straight line. I think they need a larger receiver. I think they need, like, someone who has, like Jordan Watkins, but not Jordan Watkins. [00:56:30] Speaker B: Jacob. [00:56:30] Speaker A: But, I mean, I would straight up sign Andrew Armstrong, like, off the Chiefs practice squad. [00:56:36] Speaker B: It's not a bad idea [00:56:39] Speaker A: after, like, one of the most incredible is OBJ [00:56:42] Speaker B: on the Vikings practice squad now. [00:56:45] Speaker A: Unclear. Unclear. It's hard to find active practice squads. [00:56:50] Speaker B: You have to go on the NFL rosters. It's our lads has it. But I don't blame them for not updating it by the day. [00:56:57] Speaker A: I'm pretty sure that guys. [00:56:59] Speaker B: I mean, yeah, this is. This is Larry Krueger's time to shine. [00:57:04] Speaker A: We'll pass that off to Larry in [00:57:06] Speaker B: the same way the Seahawks pass stuff off. Special teams was not the difference in this game because there wasn't that much difference. But the fact that the Niners were able to go toe for toe in special teams, even with their blunder, speaks volumes. [00:57:19] Speaker A: Yeah. I mean, it kept them in it and it kept them, like, despite not being able to move the ball. Also, like Pinero, I don't know what's going on there. [00:57:27] Speaker B: That was a bad miss. Then it wasn't a problem. And now everything's kind of fading a little bit to the right. I don't love where the golf swings at. [00:57:34] Speaker A: Yeah. Yeah. Again, he's a guy that, like, kicks it super straight, and it's a weird. It's a little bit of a different motion than some people, just the way they kick the ball. So, like. Yeah, it's slightly off. It could be majorly off. Yeah. [00:57:45] Speaker B: Well, Harrison Mievis is available if they need to go in there for fullback. Now we're talking. I. I do want to go back to the Niners defense. [00:57:56] Speaker A: Yes. [00:57:56] Speaker B: Just because I feel like that really should be the only thing we're talking about. I agree. Khalid Kareem had great reps in this game. [00:58:06] Speaker A: Yeah. Got hurt. But, like, he's. This is like, probably the most. He's earned his money year of all time for Chris Kasurk. [00:58:15] Speaker B: Oh, my God. Again, in doing stuff that's outside of. Well, I speak for him here, like, outside of his comfort zone, though, in this game. A lot of comfort zone stuff, frankly, like, pretty. Pretty straightforward. I mean, not preseason level straightforward, but not a lot of bells and whistles in this game. On either offense or defense for the Niners, I think that they just wanted. This is galaxy brain. We try not to get there too far unless it's in the fun, esoteric ways that we do things. Like, it feels like the Niners coaches in the game of I know that you know that you know that I know was like, what if we were just more physical than them and did all of our basic stuff and like, a real, like, manhood game in a way. And that could backfire in a big way. [00:58:59] Speaker A: But no, I. I felt it. I mentioned it to you. They just felt, like, more aggressive. It felt like they were proactive and like Greenlaw, despite being a maniac and rightfully getting suspended. Just head buddy Ernest Jones, really, really brutally stupid. Absolutely. Like, one suspension deserved everything. Deserved. Really stupid. [00:59:20] Speaker B: He's a habitual line stepper. He was always getting suspended. [00:59:24] Speaker A: It's tough when your ethos is coached from day one is like, be violent. And he's like, well, this is. [00:59:29] Speaker B: But, oh, I'm not allowed to do violence. And they're like, not that violence. We want the other violence. Well, what's the difference? I don't know. [00:59:35] Speaker A: Headbutting somebody with a helmet on. Crazy. [00:59:38] Speaker B: Got to know where the line is, but we also need you to go over the line. [00:59:41] Speaker A: Level of physicality and aggression that was brought from him, from Mustafa, especially, like, up front, like, with Michael and Keon White and, like, Warner, too. Yeah, there was a level of that that it felt like Seattle was like. Like Elijah Arroyo is like, their second tight end just getting thrown around a lot. They just didn't look like they were. They could hang with that, and I think that was notable. [01:00:05] Speaker B: Meanwhile, the Niners are out here throwing out Sebastian Valdez at 5Tech, and he's just not great. But winning reps. [01:00:12] Speaker A: He's awesome. He's awesome. He's just like, he. He doesn't have a plan on any rep. He's just like, I'm going to be strong and see what happens. [01:00:21] Speaker B: Like, it's not a bad plan most of the time. [01:00:24] Speaker A: Awesome. [01:00:24] Speaker B: Keon White was just unbelievable. Beat that trick. [01:00:29] Speaker A: Also, we didn't even talk about Renardo Green. [01:00:31] Speaker B: We've talked about Renardo Green a lot this year, to be fair. Like, this is the man who was promised this. You were hot to trot on him. He was no Trey Amos, but you were out to trot on him. And do we see Trey Amos this week? I'm pretty sure. [01:00:43] Speaker A: I think we do. Although he's, like, always injured for Washington, so I have no idea if he's healthy or not. Yeah. [01:00:49] Speaker B: So this is. This is the. This is the definitive cover six corner. [01:00:56] Speaker A: God damn it. I didn't even. I didn't. I haven't even checked the Washington commander's injury report ever. And it says Tremes downgraded to out for week five. [01:01:04] Speaker B: Aren't we all? [01:01:07] Speaker A: Halton. [01:01:08] Speaker B: Halton being just a game wrecker on a level that they have not. They've paid so much money to find a player who's doing what grace capital and draft capital to find a player to do what Grayson Halton is doing right now, which is like, Malik, just go through the list. How many people have they tried at this job? And some of them have done fine, but no one did what he just did in that game, that singular game. And yeah, it's Sundell, and yeah, it's the rotation of guard. Like, not a good situation to take advantage of. He took full. I mean, a truly. A truly superior game. Like, gonna be hard to have a better game than that in his career. But he was exceptional. [01:01:54] Speaker A: Yeah, I mean, there's just, like. He's not just a burst guy. Like, he's sort of like, as we graded him out, like, in college, there's a lot of, like, burst and wiggle and like, get up field and attack, which he has. But he's been. I think what's really encouraging, like, from the jump is that he started with, like, a foundation in not getting washed out. And he's got. He got washed out early more, but he's. It's happening less. He's anchoring really well. And because of that low center of gravity and violence, that little bit of, like, rip he has, he can, like, split a double team and shed a block and read. Even though he's, like, short, he's able to read and react really well, which is kind of in a way that, like, is antithetical to a lot of what the Niners do. That's just get up field, which he still does. I mean, it's just. I'm really impressed with this game all around, and it started in the run game. [01:02:45] Speaker B: I'm very interested to see moving forward if this team can stop Duo. The Seahawks don't run it. When they did run it in this game, it worked really well. It's been an issue. I. I think it worked pretty well. It was their best. I think it was their best run stuff, but neither here nor there. I don't think that they can stop Duo still. That is, if they can stop that. This is a team that you Always, [01:03:10] Speaker A: like, typically doesn't lead to explosives. And few teams are willing to like, spam it in the way like McVeigh did. And eventually, like, you have to have another kind of sauce. [01:03:22] Speaker B: I don't disagree with that. [01:03:24] Speaker A: But pretty can break you down. [01:03:26] Speaker B: Pretty good thing to have to get 13 play drives where all you have to do is call one play and you get six of them for free. Like, the chains just always move. You're always in second. And like short, like, yeah, that, that's a big deal and that's a huge deal in the playoffs. We're a long way from the playoffs, but this team's going to the playoffs right now. As it stands, the Niners have the second best EPA on offense, which shouldn't surprise anybody given the schedule, given the [01:03:52] Speaker A: way that Brock's played, which only decreased because of Seattle's defense this week. [01:03:57] Speaker B: I mean, yeah, but brock. Brock is 0.36 expected points added per pass play. That is obscene. They are actually a negative run team on offense right now in epa. [01:04:11] Speaker A: Although to be fair, runs I think on average are a negative play when it comes through. And they're. [01:04:17] Speaker B: And they're just shy. It's 0.05. So I'm not, again, I'm not trying to make some statement. They have a bad run game. I just don't think they have a great run game defense. They are the fifth ranked EPA defense right now. And yes, schedule, but also EPA does take a little bit of that out, right? It's. It's per play. All these things they're at. [01:04:38] Speaker A: Yeah, you were right. Duo and man were the most effective. Just. Just to give you your flowers. Just to just give you your flowers. [01:04:45] Speaker B: Thank you. [01:04:45] Speaker A: Pushback. [01:04:46] Speaker B: It's. It's legitimately at this point the only thing going into a week that I go like, ooh, if this team does that, the Niners are going to have trouble. Whereas last year it was like 14 things is duo. It's the only thing that I'd be like that could be a real issue for them now. Maybe counter gets in there as we progress and there is a lot of play calling that Raheem is doing that we saw in the Miami game can kind of burn you if you're really well coached, which I think Miami, like, I earnestly mean this Miami might be the best coach team they've played so far this year. [01:05:19] Speaker A: I disagree. [01:05:21] Speaker B: Late on me. [01:05:22] Speaker A: Do you think Miami's better coach than Seattle? [01:05:26] Speaker B: I don't think Brian Flory had a very good game. [01:05:30] Speaker A: I don't think he had a great game either. But they also had JSN kind of get hurt. They have an iffy. They had a running back who couldn't [01:05:39] Speaker B: hold on to the ball. Yeah, that's kind of an issue. I was not of his dead. Yeah, Jake's got taken out on that one. [01:05:47] Speaker A: No, I was a big fan of Holani. [01:05:49] Speaker B: It's amazing that he made it this far given the fact that he can't hold the football. [01:05:52] Speaker A: Yeah, I didn't know about that part. I was not. Yeah. [01:05:55] Speaker B: Anyway, okay, just quickly run through it like, the. The Rams were not mentally there. They were physically there, but their brains never made the trip. Miami has the worst roster in the league by far, but they were, like, trying interesting stuff. Like, everybody in the locker room was very complimentary of, like, the stuff they were trying on both sides. Arizona was just generally mid in all capacities, and that might be even overstating it. The Broncos are an abysmally offensive coordinated team, which has a lot to do with their quarterback and a very well coordinated defensive team. Yep, Seattle is an exceptionally coordinated defensive team, like, maybe the best that's ever done. [01:06:35] Speaker A: He's not willing to give the Dolphins that much credit. [01:06:37] Speaker B: I'm just saying, irrespective of rosters, I think that the Dolphins did the most tactically to at least make the 49ers think they didn't have to do much thinking against Seattle when they were on defense. And again, it's not to say that that's not going to be the case for the rest of these games because they're that much better. [01:06:56] Speaker A: But, like, yeah, I didn't. I didn't feel like they were tested as. As much. He did get a couple where, like, you know, he attacked Lenore and Brown, but he didn't keep going back to him. [01:07:06] Speaker B: There was a lot of Day one also seems. [01:07:10] Speaker A: It seems like a nightmare. Like, that's just like, yeah, he's not working at all with that. I don't know what's going on. I think. I think it's going to be Cup. Who's gonna. If, like, JSN's out. I think Cup's gonna get fed. Not well. [01:07:22] Speaker B: They're one of the worst offenses in the NFL this year. Like, legit, like EPA. Like, they're. I think they're like 26th. [01:07:29] Speaker A: I thought they were pretty good with Lock. [01:07:31] Speaker B: Locke actually put up some points, but they couldn't run the ball in those games. So Locke was throwing it a lot. It was a very Jamis coded scenario. Washington is not particularly well Coordinated on either side, though I am excited to see Sonny Styles. Atlanta. Atlanta might be sneakily, really well coordinated. [01:07:49] Speaker A: Yeah, I think they've been pretty impressive. [01:07:52] Speaker B: Like, obviously, Ulbricht's the man, even though it's. [01:07:54] Speaker A: Isn't it Zach Taylor? [01:07:56] Speaker B: No, he went down to Tampa. [01:07:58] Speaker A: Oh, right, right. [01:07:58] Speaker B: He's the harbinger of death. No, it's, it's. It's Stefanski. [01:08:04] Speaker A: Oh, it's Tommy Reed. [01:08:05] Speaker B: Tommy Reese. [01:08:08] Speaker A: Right, right, right. [01:08:08] Speaker B: Okay, there's debate. [01:08:09] Speaker A: I was thinking of Zach Robinson. [01:08:11] Speaker B: I'm legitimately looking at this and I, I will con. I will concede that when you don't have a good roster, but you seem well coached, you get bonus points for that. But I'm just looking at this right now, and if we're just doing the binary, yay or nay on offensive and defensive coordinators, the best two court, like the best total coordination. The two. Yes. Teams that are on their schedule between now and the Vikings, which I think are two. Yes. Coordinators there as well. Certainly on defense is going to be the Raiders and the Dolphins. [01:08:47] Speaker A: Yeah, Raiders have impressed me. [01:08:51] Speaker B: What a weird, weird sport we're in. [01:08:53] Speaker A: Yeah, they're strange. Strange teams. Just strange. Strange schedule. [01:09:00] Speaker B: We'll see. We'll see. [01:09:01] Speaker A: Looking a lot easier than it looked at the start. [01:09:03] Speaker B: Well, yeah, until 42 other guys get injured. [01:09:08] Speaker A: We'll find out. I don't know. I'm gonna. I'm gonna end up playing at wide receiver. [01:09:11] Speaker B: The. The back half, the post. Buy Raiders at home. I'm interested. Not saying anything. Interesting. Cowboys on the road, interested. Not saying anything one way or not in Mexico City. Vikings in Mexico City is going to be a hellscape. Mexico City is lovely, but Brian Flores is. Is out here at altitude. Yeah, Brian Flores is. Is. He's a harbinger. Yeah, that's a harbinger of death. Then you follow that up with Seattle. I mean, that is just brutal. [01:09:47] Speaker A: Like. [01:09:47] Speaker B: Yeah. Oh, my God. Giants, Rams, Chargers, Gold. Charges, charges. Chiefs, Eagles, Cardinals. What else do you want to get off your chest? [01:09:59] Speaker A: Not much, other than, you know, we'll have some grades and some good takeaways coming later this week, and it appears like where I'm actually going to be able to join you for some of these post games coming. [01:10:12] Speaker B: Fantastic. [01:10:13] Speaker A: Thank Christ. [01:10:14] Speaker B: Glad to hear it. Because at a certain point, I just. I hear myself and I go, I should get out. And I can't get out. I can't get out. The money's too good. Speaking of which, if we don't do this often, we need to do it. We are listener supported podcasters. We don't sell you betting stuff. We're not in bed with Big Pick. If you like the show, you've made it this far. So I would sure hope that you like it or really hate it. Tell somebody about it. We're not gaming the law algorithm with clips and a bunch of shorts or anything like that. We're trying to keep it earnest and honest and straightforward. None of this fluff and nonsense. We're trying to be in depth. We'll see if we'll do it. So we got it. We got to ask you to do the hard work for us. Just tell somebody. Hit the plus button, the big thumbs up. You can hit thumbs down too if you want. [01:11:05] Speaker A: That's right. [01:11:05] Speaker B: Do it right. Subscribe. By the way, just as a footnote, we're going to subscriber only in the comments. [01:11:13] Speaker A: I was unaware of this, but sure, let's do it. [01:11:15] Speaker B: I just told Jake right now. I just. I appreciate it. If you're subscribed, lay it on us. Lay on all the hate you want. You're not subscribed. The hell do I care? You're either with us, here, without us, and that means are you subscribed or not? So hit those buttons. Just said that out loud. And we'll talk to you later on this week for the preview. [01:11:34] Speaker A: Bye.
