[00:00:01] Speaker A: All right, we're doing this thing again. Dieter, Hutch, time to just break down every possible thing that can happen in training camp. This is the joys of disappearing for a month. Jake, how you doing, baby?
[00:00:15] Speaker B: I'm doing excellent. I just got back from Yellowstone, so.
[00:00:19] Speaker A: Okay, okay, okay. Calm down now. Calm down. We still have to talk about the safeties.
[00:00:23] Speaker B: Yeah. There's a video out there of me getting destroyed by a bison. I didn't think anyone was watching, but I guess everybody saw it.
[00:00:39] Speaker A: All right, it is Dieter and Hutch, and we are, in fact, doing a training camp preview, and there's not much time for dilly dallying. There's also, like, a new look. We got a new look going on, and we're. We're figuring it out on the fly.
Death to Streamyard. That's my new take.
[00:00:58] Speaker B: That's right.
[00:00:59] Speaker A: Anyone who is a sicko, get into the comments. We will do some Q A at the end. And theoretically, there's a lot of questions because we haven't even started to get answers yet.
But I just want to go in a way, position by position here with the 49ers heading into training camp because there's a lot of questions with this team. There's a lot of reasons to be optimistic. They have a really good quarterback. They have a really good head coach. They. They also have a lot of things that are going to be determined in the next month and a half before they get on a plane to Australia.
And seeing as I'm someone who is constantly saying that safety is our destiny, let's start with the weirdest position of all of them on this roster right now, which is safety. Into which I asked Jake, who do you trust? Do you trust currently on the roster at safety for the San Francisco 49ers?
[00:01:49] Speaker B: No, I don't trust a single person at safety. I would lean.
[00:01:54] Speaker A: Actually.
[00:01:54] Speaker B: I can't. I actually cannot lean Malik Mustafa because he was not healthy and was not trustworthy last season, despite the fact that I love him as a player.
Loved him coming out of school, but he regressed substantially last year. I think he didn't trust his body. He didn't have a camp.
Jair Brown was their best safety, and that's not good. That's not good for anybody involved. And Marquis Siegel, what is he? We don't know yet. How are they going to use him? Are they going to use him?
They've got, like.
[00:02:24] Speaker A: I just feel really good special teams player. I mean, I'm still bullish, and frankly, I look at this roster he's the only person that I would want playing free safety in Australia.
But it is.
It's a tricky. It's a tricky one. It's like a legit. I was talking to Larry the other day, and I don't think that the starting free safety for this team is currently on the roster.
[00:02:52] Speaker B: Do you think he's going to be acquired in Australia? Do you think it's Ira Kunde?
[00:02:58] Speaker A: I'm not sure he's tall enough. Those soccer players are.
[00:03:02] Speaker B: Doesn't matter.
[00:03:03] Speaker A: They're all short. It kind of does.
It's. I don't know who it is, though. Right.
[00:03:08] Speaker B: Neither do I.
[00:03:09] Speaker A: Neither do I. Safety market is always weird. I will say, Larry, these are words that are about to come out of my mouth. Larry made an interesting point the other day in that we don't know anything about Raheem Morris. You and I think we get a have a read on him. We can have talked to people and studied him, and he's inheriting an entire roster, in effect. Yeah. He's only made a couple of signings and none of them have been true mainline signings.
And that's not that big of a problem because there's a lot of good players on this defense. I would want to inherit Fred Warner, too, but he also might just not like the way some of the guys that are already on this roster play, because this roster was built to play zone. And he's a man to man guy, or at least a dynamic zone. Cover 6, Cover 8, Cover 9 guy.
In theory, who knows? You could show up with the 49ers and now suddenly everything's landmark zone again. But there will be a lot of things that happen, I think, in the next month and a half where it will come down as shocking if we were to tell theselves that we are today. Like, hey, you know, Jack Jones is starting a corner, but truly, anything could happen.
Yeah, I mean, I mean, in that. Yeah. All this to say, Jake and I apologize. All this to say, like, wouldn't shock me at all if three or four weeks into camp, the Niners are like, oh, we don't want this guy anymore. Let's trade him. Like, Raheem doesn't like him. He likes this guy. We're going to go with this guy and we're going to trade for something we need, which is a free safety, because we have four strong safeties on this roster.
[00:04:51] Speaker B: It's the fact that they're going to Australia, in and of itself is really so strange. I know we joked about how silly it is and Shanahan being mad, but it really does set up an outrageously strange dynamic where you are bringing in a new coordinator. You have all these bits and pieces of like, this team could absolutely rip or fall apart in a second.
And it just.
[00:05:16] Speaker A: Very high floor, very high ceiling.
[00:05:18] Speaker B: One of the more on one of the more uncertain camps and rosters just in.
Like, I could see it going another way. By the way. Jack Boom Easter apparently signed. He signed him to a three year deal.
I'm excited for that. I know we haven't really. We're not gonna get into special teams just yet, but man, we will get
[00:05:41] Speaker A: into special teams though, because it might be the most important part of this roster. And I, I like, I only half joke that special teams might be the most important part, but yeah, Bowmeester's in, then they have to. Then he has to go to Australia. It's like this all could have been sorted, right?
[00:05:57] Speaker B: Just leave him over there like I said, and scoop him on the way back. Stash him on the plane. But I guess it worked out.
[00:06:03] Speaker A: Yeah.
Yeah.
[00:06:06] Speaker B: On safety, so like, Jair wants to be a big nickel. They said last year, like, hey, we need you to play.
Like, you're the only one who could talk and seems to understand the defense. It doesn't mean you can execute it, but, like, we don't have a choice, so go do it.
I think in an ideal world, in my view, it's Mustafa somewhere in the box, roaming around a little bit Seagull. Deep safety. Like, again, deep safety. It's all fluid. Like, of course positions are interchangeable, but really, like, I'd want Siegel playing like deep coverage as like the guy if you were going to lean one way or the other, which you end more often than not.
[00:06:48] Speaker A: You want him back there and I want Brown.
[00:06:51] Speaker B: Like, as much as we've ripped on Brown, he has a role to play on this team, even if it like, he's probably the starter, but like Sam linebacker.
[00:06:59] Speaker A: Is that that role?
[00:06:59] Speaker B: Exactly. Genuinely, yes. I think that's the best fit for him. And then you see if, I don't know, Jalen Stroman has anything to offer.
[00:07:09] Speaker A: Wow, that's a tough sell because, I mean, even at OTAs in minicamp, I'm watching Jalen Stroman and I'm like, I can't do this.
[00:07:15] Speaker B: I basically, Adrian Colbert, right? It's just a guy with like, I
[00:07:20] Speaker A: don't know that Colbert gave him good reps. At one point, Adrian Colbert was like, yeah, you could do a hell of a lot better. But like, there's something there. I. I cannot justify putting Derek Canteen on the field or, you know, by
[00:07:34] Speaker B: the way, by the way, the most he's been in the year, the league for eight years, Rookie of all time last year, where you're like, what do you mean? The name Derek Canteen is a rookie. I don't believe you.
[00:07:45] Speaker A: No, I'm pretty sure he's been on the practice squad. It's like a shining situation. He was always in the photo. He's always in the team photo.
There's. There's Jacob Robinson as well. I think he's too small, too skinny to actually play safety, but I think he's got the stuff between the ears for it.
[00:08:03] Speaker B: He wants. Certainly wants to sacrifice his life on the field, and that's important.
[00:08:07] Speaker A: There's.
This is Galaxy price suck. Probably not, seeing as he was drafted as a corner, but they might have to do this. We've discussed it in the same way that they might do it with Renardo Green if push comes to shove. But that's like a nuclear option. That's like, this guy can't play corner for me.
I can't really get rid of him because he's worthless to every other team.
Like, there's no, you know, bad player for bad player deal or like, you know, mistake for mistake deal that we can make, which usually involves the Jaguars, for whatever that's worth. Like, the Jaguars and the Browns love to make mistake for mistake trades. And I think they made them last year and then like, maybe they can move him to free safety. But like, if he can't do the role of a free safety at corner as a cover six boundary side safety, like, I have a hard time believing that he'll take on the ultimate responsibility at true free safety, but I've got a lot of.
[00:09:09] Speaker B: I got to say something just looking at this roster, you know when you're in a franchise mode and they're like, stop, stop simulating. You need to assign a player.
[00:09:18] Speaker A: Because there's a lot of stuff.
[00:09:20] Speaker B: Yeah, there's a lot of guys like, where you're like, all right, let me sign the cheapest minimum guy who's like rated 70 or 68 overall.
Nate Hobbs, Garrett Wallow, Ashton Davis, Jack Jones, where you're just like, I need a guy.
He's immediate one click, one year contract minimum on the team. I don't. It's not to say those players are actually like that. It's not Madden, but there is a lot of, like William Bradley King, right? It's like, oh, I wonder Maybe Saran Neal can have a better.
[00:09:57] Speaker A: Well, the problem is Brand. Neil is a good special teamer. There's a lot of like, this is what I mean.
65 overalls is what you're.
[00:10:05] Speaker B: This is what I mean. He's like a player where you're like, no, he's actually, you know, like there's a lot of that with this.
[00:10:10] Speaker A: I like that one attribute he has.
[00:10:12] Speaker B: You can't. Like there's a lot of players that you should probably discount immediately on this roster. And there's a lot of. Well, hey, maybe.
[00:10:19] Speaker A: Why is Eli Apple here? Well, I will say this, I will say this. This is as deep of a 90 man roster as they have had since 21, maybe 22. Maybe I'm over. Over.
[00:10:33] Speaker B: Yeah, they did have a great roster in 1921.
[00:10:39] Speaker A: Who was on that team? Old.
[00:10:41] Speaker B: Old Crooked Knees, Willowbanks, Old Gap Tooth Johnson.
[00:10:45] Speaker A: They were all old and they were 21 years old. But smoking. It's hell of a thing. You ever looked at the cards of like old English soccer players and it's like this man was 24. It's like that man, Harry Kane.
[00:10:57] Speaker B: Fair enough.
[00:10:59] Speaker A: They like, there will be some difficult 90 man roster cut down decisions. There will also be a bunch of guys who are just there, who aren't kids, who aren't immediate cuts, who will get a week's worth of Chronicle stories written about them and then disappear before the end of camp. Like no chance in hell that they're actually getting on a plane to Australia unless something goes horribly wrong, in which case, congratulations, William Bradley King, you get to pet a koala. But yeah, that's. Something's gone horribly wrong. And they might make a trade before that.
[00:11:31] Speaker B: So I can't, I can't wait to see Mikhail Camara, who again, I nicknamed the Nail because he just doesn't really do it. He's just there.
Yeah, Camille, the nail. That's right. He just. Mikhail the Nail.
You just, just a straight. I don't know what he does again, but.
[00:11:48] Speaker A: But like wins, baby.
[00:11:50] Speaker B: Yeah, it's just, it's YMCA basketball at defensive end. Right. It's just the big guy where you're like, what's.
[00:11:58] Speaker A: How's the doing this? He's the Nicola Jokic of defensive ends.
[00:12:03] Speaker B: We've lost the plot.
[00:12:05] Speaker A: Well, we'll get to defensive ends. I think we're both in agreement that one, we're going to spend a lot of time watching the safeties and two, I'm not sure that's a good thing for anyone's mental Health least of all Raheem Morris's.
It would be wonderful if, as you suggested, they have a nice little three man thing going on with a big nickel where Stout doesn't have to play. Though I, you know, everyone's saying from the Internet that Stout is all yoked up. That's cool. We'll find out once they start playing football.
[00:12:35] Speaker B: Needs to let it go. That's a separate topic.
[00:12:38] Speaker A: Oh, yes, he does. Yes, he does. He looks like an ancient Egyptian from the mummy.
The energy he's got going on with that, that's a big. Who was, who was the winger for Man United who had the, had the, the dreads or the, the. The braids? But it started right here.
That's what we had.
[00:13:03] Speaker B: The inverse is Gareth Bale tying the tightest ponytail of all time to hide.
And, and he's getting in. Getting worse later in his career because he was actually worried about it, like,
[00:13:12] Speaker A: coming on the follicles. You can't be doing that.
Testosterone isn't gonna work. No, he's just, he's, he's, he's doing. He's got too much testosterone and the hair can't hang and what he has. He's really rocking this. It's a bygone era. We don't have any players that, you know, Nate Thurmonding out there.
[00:13:30] Speaker B: It gives me, like, truly, like a man's confidence. Like he doesn't care. Like he's there to play. Yeah, yeah.
[00:13:36] Speaker A: And he's a good player, but is he someone I want on the field when they're going into 12 and 13 personnel? Not particularly.
[00:13:46] Speaker B: And I really think, like, not just to maximize his career because the 49ers aren't concerned with that. They're, like, getting him as like the rookie contract and that's it.
[00:13:55] Speaker A: Let's see if you live.
[00:13:57] Speaker B: Right. Like, but, but it's, it's something where the more you can find other players that can fit roles in those sort of. Whether it's like big nickel or just like base that can actually play, the more effective he's going to be because he's not sacrificing his body. Playing and play out.
[00:14:15] Speaker A: Now you do want to be multiple, right? Like, if we learned anything from this past football season, it's that you don't want to substitute all that often because it gives the offense an advantage.
But you also don't want to be leaving dudes out there who are barbecue chicken. I mean, you definitely want to substitute if you're playing Luke Gifford. It's Sam.
Because they'll just run it and throw it at him until he gets off the field. So it's not to say Stout is of that ilk, it's just to say he itty bitty even if he ain't so itty bitty anymore and is.
[00:14:44] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:14:44] Speaker A: A 37 year old man.
[00:14:46] Speaker B: And the interesting thing about it is like it could be a total nightmare position and you look back at last year and you're like they did such a good job with everyone essentially dead that like there's a base level of confidence that like however disastrous it gets, they're going to find a way to function. Maybe that's optimistic to try and replicate that. You don't want that to be your mode of operation, but it was really impressive last year and I think that base level of like great coaching that they did. Yeah. Gives you a level of like they'll figure something out. It probably won't be exactly the ceiling that they hoped, but it'll be something.
[00:15:25] Speaker A: I mean they got Jerry Gray in the building, they got Ray Brown, I mean and obviously Raheem is a secondaries guy. If he had to like, yeah.
[00:15:37] Speaker B: If Bernardo Green can't figure it out this year, well.
[00:15:40] Speaker A: And that leads it to this. Like it is the Renardo Green year. It is the Renardo Green training camp in so many ways. It's not as if there's someone clearly knocking on the door, but they're not going to go into the season with him on the fence. He's either got it and he's in charge and he's the number one CB or not. And if it's not, it's not like they're moving Lenore over. They're just going to start playing Jones.
[00:16:05] Speaker B: Kyle's going to go at him. Kyle's going to go at him in training camp and he's going to test him and he's going to throw everything he has at him to challenge him mentally. Like Kyle does that stuff. Like he's, he's like, let me be a dick to find out if I can trust this guy when it matters. Because Kyle wants to trust him. They want to believe in him. We, I mean, I do, I love he. I think he's phenomenal as a rookie.
He could be great, he should be great. But like the mental side, all the other stuff, this is a monumental camp for him.
[00:16:37] Speaker A: He's going to get Mike Evans and Ricky Piersol one on one ten times a day and he has to win. He has to win a lot of those reps. He's not going to win all of them, but he's trying to break his ankles and he's going to have Mike Evans dunking on him and he needs to be able to handle. And if he can handle that, he can handle damn near anything like full stop. I know that those are not, you know, receivers one and two in the league, but if you can handle the physicality and the long strides of a Mike Evans with the, you know, herky jerkness of a Ricky Piersol who gets out of his break and is somehow faster, like if you can handle both of those guys, you can handle anyone in the league. That is. That is a hot and cold scenario. So.
And then he needs. He needs to be evidently to everyone there, a master communicator.
And because they clearly don't. I mean the last administrations did not trust Lenore to be that guy.
[00:17:36] Speaker B: They haven't safety understand his assignment on every play.
[00:17:42] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And then you have Stout. You have Stout in, in the slot. I mean, is there any. This is the position that I think maybe looks the most different come week one than what we currently expect now in that they might end up going with Jones. It might be looter fits what it is they're trying to do schematically. Lenore, maybe they like, I don't know, they can slide Lenore back and Nate
[00:18:08] Speaker B: Hobbs is a total wild card where like really he's a nickel but.
And he couldn't stay healthy. But like Green Bay really liked him. Like a lot of people really liked him.
[00:18:18] Speaker A: Jack of all trades, he's.
[00:18:21] Speaker B: They've got some interesting guys. Like there's. There's a lot that could happen at corner.
Like Jack Jones is like a player. Like he's done some. He's been a very good corner at various points of his career.
[00:18:33] Speaker A: At times kind of had the same issue, if I'm recalling that, that we're having with Green right now, which is like Buddy's head.
[00:18:42] Speaker B: I don't know.
[00:18:44] Speaker A: A little bit different. A little bit different, but not that different.
[00:18:47] Speaker B: Right.
[00:18:48] Speaker A: I'm very curious to see how that one plays out. I think we're going to get pretty immediate returns on that as well.
I'm also very curious to see how Raheem handles because scheme is going to be a bit more vanilla, I'd imagine in training camp and absolutely in preseason they're not going to show a thing. But I'm very curious to see how they handle the Nor and Green.
[00:19:12] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:19:12] Speaker A: At the start as it comes to field side boundary because I thought of all the knocks I had on Bob Salad down the stretch.
Just saying we are betting you're not going to throw it over the middle and we're just going to keep Lenore on the field side. The entire time against the Eagles was really, really good. That was grade A stuff and it worked masterfully. He's not great in space. He needs everything in front of him.
I'm wondering if Raheem Morris saw that tape and went, that's a good idea. We should do that in perpetuity. It puts more on Green, but I think it would really allow Lenore to shine.
[00:19:52] Speaker B: Yeah, I'm with you. I think, I think you bet on the upside.
Put Lenore in a position he's comfortable with. But again, it all. It's. It's funny like in some ways like Renardo Green, he's the most important non like clear star. I think on the defense, like he really.
There's. And. And safety, you could argue but like they function with weird safety play.
Like it. Safety could level up a lot and really help this defense. But corner is.
I mean he fundamentally has to be good or I guess you trust Jack
[00:20:28] Speaker A: Jones or Ephesians pr. I mean it's, it's right. Come on down.
I guess I'm fascinated because also Ephesians Price Hock doesn't seem theoretically like the kind of corner that he's coming from the Terrells. Like he's.
[00:20:47] Speaker B: It's a weird. It was. It. It surprised me a lot. Just like.
[00:20:52] Speaker A: But he's.
It could look awesome. It could look awesome. It's just the tape at Washington, everything's so bespoke.
[00:20:59] Speaker B: I mean him, him, him playing boundary, like keeping him in a tight.
Like using the sideline to his advantage. Yeah, I think he was phenomenal. That's one of the. But he also just would like do that non stop and just will get flagged.
So like, we'll see.
[00:21:19] Speaker A: We'll see.
[00:21:19] Speaker B: We will see.
[00:21:21] Speaker A: It's a lot of wild cards there.
Yeah, some wild cards. Now we know who is starting at will and, and Mike how often.
Well, on the field it's like again, he'll be out there. I don't know for how long. I don't know for how much effectiveness. But he'll be out there. That's the idea. And then after that there is no rhyme or reason to this depth chart at all. Like they brought back Gifford because Gifford's a great special teamer and also no one wanted to sign him. Okay.
But then.
And Garrett Wallow's back because Garrett Wallow looked pretty good, all things considered, for a guy they signed off the street, so not bad. But then there's Tatum Bethune's back, because Tatum Bethune was not as good. But, you know, you can't cut him now.
I mean, legitimately. Like, I don't know if Tatum Bethune makes this team, but he might.
And then you have three guys that are exceptionally difficult to. To make sense of, and Larry Worth and Jaden Duggar are the same body. They're the same body.
[00:22:28] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:22:29] Speaker A: And when you add in Romello height, who's really a defensive end, but kind of aligns as a third down. Sam linebacker playing on an overfront. Yeah, like, that makes sense, right? That's the Leonard Floyd long arm, skinny body, set the edge, fifth man on the line. Like, that is a. That is 100. A prototype. And I kind of get it. I don't think Duggar's very good, but if you are just shoehorning him into that role, maybe because there's not a lot of dudes who got arms that can tie their shoes without having to bend their waist. And, like, they found two of them. And then there's Nick Martin, who is not that at all.
At all.
He's. He's as wide as he is.
[00:23:17] Speaker B: What is Nick Martin? Would you say he's a cube?
[00:23:20] Speaker A: He's a cube. And I guess he's your backup, Will.
But I thought Garrett Wallow was your backup.
[00:23:26] Speaker B: You know. You know what Nick Martin is. It's. He's literally that. You remember the hamster car. The cube car.
[00:23:32] Speaker A: The hamster car.
[00:23:33] Speaker B: Do you remember? It was the ad with all the hamsters.
[00:23:35] Speaker A: Oh, yes, yes.
[00:23:37] Speaker B: Yeah. It was like. It was. They were all Envy. You know, the Envy phone. It was. They were all those colors, like lime green and burnt orange.
[00:23:46] Speaker A: Early. The early aughts were a truly terrible time for aesthetics.
[00:23:50] Speaker B: Correct. When they were like, we don't.
[00:23:52] Speaker A: Everything was lime green.
[00:23:53] Speaker B: Yeah, exactly. He is that. But it's like silver.
[00:23:56] Speaker A: A lot of silver. A lot of shiny silver. Back then.
[00:23:58] Speaker B: He's that. But like, when. When people take like a Subaru Impreza and throw like a rocket launcher engine into it and it's got no control, but it's just.
It's going as fast as it can and the wheels are going to come off, but it's fun for a sec.
[00:24:16] Speaker A: I'm not even sure he's that. Like, I don't.
I have no earthly idea what he is because when he plays from scrimmage, he's washed out so quickly.
It there's he never had time to go. He just disappears. And when he played on special teams he was looking around and then getting his clock clean to the point where he got a concussion that kept him out for the rest of the year.
[00:24:38] Speaker B: Again put him at fullback.
[00:24:41] Speaker A: Kinda like a fullback.
[00:24:43] Speaker B: Like I don't already wearing number 45.
[00:24:47] Speaker A: It's an easy transition.
Ben Garland can teach him the way of how to switch sides.
I also kind of, I kind of want James Thompson to do that as well. When they need a tackle just get James Thompson. He's already wearing 75. You're 6 foot 8 and 295 pounds. Like you can do this my friend.
I don't know. I don't know how.
I might be too narrow minded. I don't understand how these pieces are on the same roster and I'm very curious how at the end of camp they're going to manipulate it to where they just have clear backups. Like they just you only are going to keep six linebackers.
[00:25:29] Speaker B: I think they're just going to throw them out there and like not play Dre Greenlaw and just say let's see what happens. We don't know who any of these guys are.
[00:25:39] Speaker A: Dream I'll practice for a second.
[00:25:41] Speaker B: Also here's a question. I don't want to fully switch to the offensive side of the ball. I want to finish the defense.
Unfortunately I believe there is a clear answer to this. But who do you would you expect that Fred Warner makes his personal target for training camp as he almost always does?
[00:26:00] Speaker A: It's. I think that Fred wants to go at Stribling.
[00:26:04] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:26:05] Speaker A: On principle.
[00:26:06] Speaker B: Exactly.
[00:26:07] Speaker A: I think they're both going to have a hard time because they're so likable.
[00:26:12] Speaker B: I, I you actually that is the exact take I had which is that I think he's gonna like him too much. Yeah. Stribling's gonna deal with that too well and also be too physical.
[00:26:23] Speaker A: Are you ready for the you ready for my answer? I think they're gonna try. I think Fred's gonna be like actually I don't like this and let's try something else. I think he's gonna try to get Connor Colby to punch him.
[00:26:35] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:26:35] Speaker A: And I think Connor Colby is going to be like cool, let's punch him.
[00:26:39] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:26:39] Speaker A: And then Kittle's gonna be on Colby side because home Iowa nonsense. And like I think it's, I think, I think he's going to try with Stribling.
I don't it's not to say that it wouldn't work like Fred can get it, but I think that it's not going to have as much zeal and then he's going to tap into some, you know, let's go fight. The redneck thing.
[00:26:57] Speaker B: There's a little bit of, like a Tim Duncan esque quality to stribling.
[00:27:01] Speaker A: Yes.
He's. And he's already 20. He's like 23 years old. Like, he's 35. I mean, ESPN did a best rosters of players under 25 today, and they're like, Romello Height doesn't qualify five for this list because he's already 25. Also, their only blue chipper was Mikel Williams. They came in third to last.
[00:27:24] Speaker B: So, yeah, it's tough.
[00:27:26] Speaker A: We're doing great.
Yeah, I, I, I'm gonna, I'm gonna say it's gonna be struggling. It's not gonna go over well. They're just gonna settle it like men, like, shake hands at the end. And then, like, Conor Colby is gonna get into some sort of a scrap.
Right.
[00:27:42] Speaker B: So defensive line, interesting because it's theoretically super, super sick.
Nick Bose is coming off ACL number 17. I, I believe it's his third.
[00:27:55] Speaker A: I've covered every one of them. It's his third.
[00:27:58] Speaker B: His third.
Mikel Williams not gonna be in training camp. Is he gonna. I don't know.
[00:28:04] Speaker A: No earthly idea.
I'm not sure they know is spoken
[00:28:08] Speaker B: of nor heard Alfred Collins coming off of a shoulder injury that again, probably will be completely forgotten about. And then people will be three weeks in and be like, wait, where's Alfred Collins? We forgot to ask about him.
[00:28:20] Speaker A: Yeah, luckily, Alfred Collins is extremely difficult to miss. If he's on the sidelines or doing those little sprints over by the former hill, it's like, yep, that's Alfred Collins. Couldn't be any other person.
Curious. I'm curious. Do you think Alfred Collins is like a Raheem Morris guy? Do you, do you think that that's the kind of player that Raheem Morris would have said, yeah, sign me up?
[00:28:42] Speaker B: Because I think Raheem Morris wants to be an Alfred Collins guy.
I think he wants to get, I think he's like, alfred, let me help you. Help me help you.
I think that's, that's, I think where it comes from, where he's like, listen, I don't know if you're my, I
[00:29:02] Speaker A: don't know if you're my type, but we're going to make this work. We're going to stay together for the kids.
I'm very curious on this defensive line because there's some.
There's some idiosyncrasies to some of these players that might not jive with five man fronts that might not jive with a lot of man. And it really. This is kind of where it becomes really obvious is if you didn't pick this up already from a lot of questions at safety and corner and even depth at linebacker. Like, this is where it becomes obvious that this team was built to Rush 4 and play landmark zone.
[00:29:39] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:29:40] Speaker A: And now they're being asked to rush five more often than not. Have guys dropping back off of the line and play a lot of man match cover. In theory. They might not. They might.
[00:29:52] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:29:53] Speaker A: Raheem Morris might figure out two weeks in, like, not going to happen. I. I need to make sure that I still have this job next year. We're going back to zone, which is the Steve Wilkes model of trying to save your own ass. So it worked out great for him, by the way.
There are some dudes, though, let's be clear.
[00:30:10] Speaker B: Like, it's a sick group if it all works out. Like, it's legitimately. Like, I'm just gonna. I'm just gonna read the names. Yeah, let's read the Michael Williams, Alfred Collins, OSA Odogizua, Nick Bosa, the theoretically starting badass.
[00:30:25] Speaker A: If those guys are healthy, that is a badass for sick group.
[00:30:29] Speaker B: Backup. Keon White, who's a starter. C.J.
[00:30:32] Speaker A: west, who's a starter, fascinated to see where he fits.
[00:30:36] Speaker B: Sam Okawanu, who's like an outstanding rotational player that every team wants. Just like such a valuable edge who you can do in any role.
[00:30:46] Speaker A: High motor has a job on all 32 NFL rosters.
[00:30:49] Speaker B: Occasionally will pull off a 6 spin move where you're like, what do you mean? Where did that come from?
Grayson Holton, who is just burst and burst and fly off the line. Romello Height. And that's without talking about all the random wild cards they have with, like, Jason, James Thompson, I don't know about Sebastian Bryce and Mikhail Kamara, Bryson Eason, like, they got a lot of interesting guys all the way back there that could.
Maybe they're not. Maybe they're nothing. But there could be something totally.
[00:31:21] Speaker A: I mean, both, Both Eason and Thompson. You're like, oh, that's going to be hard to cut. Like, we watch a lot. You and I have watched a lot of defensive line drills. It's pretty obvious, like, this is. What are we doing here. I've seen William Bradley King run the bull ring enough times to be like that's not good enough.
Nice guy.
[00:31:40] Speaker B: And then you watch Romello Height run
[00:31:41] Speaker A: it and you go oh, we cooking now. Like Mikhail Camara. You could just tell that there is something ineffable to his ability to win a rep in the same way that C.J. west kind of has it. Except you look at C.J. west and you can explain it which is his hands be made of stone.
[00:31:59] Speaker B: Maybe it's Zach Randolph. Maybe that's the comp where it's just physical. Or Al Jefferson where it's like with one hand you're like how did that, how did that happen?
[00:32:06] Speaker A: Say less brother. Say less.
As someone who's predicated their game after the great Al Jefferson just palminate just yeah. 17 foot jumpers and 42 dribbles off of the block for a little baby hook.
Those are my only two things.
[00:32:23] Speaker B: They every time it's unironically my favorite type of basketball and I'm so upset that it is gone from the game.
[00:32:29] Speaker A: I post just keep it up there.
[00:32:32] Speaker B: All I want, all I want is a. Is a 610 power forward who just plays back to the basket and drops 22 and 12 a game.
[00:32:41] Speaker A: This is, this is someone who grew up on Anthony Mason. That's. That's all I'm hearing.
They could have an absolutely awesome. I mean Cameron Sample is an NFL caliber player bottom of the roster. But like if you're playing Cameron sample 10 snaps a game, like you're, that's not a bad thing. Whereas last year they were playing dudes like 30 snaps a game and you're like this is a bad thing. This is overtly terrible.
They got some dudes. They got some dudes.
And I don't think anything is solid on that depth chart outside of Mikellenbosa will be there theoretically at some point on the bookends and adigizua starts at 3 tech. But I don't even know if 3 tech exists.
Like it. Yeah, they were talking about 2 tech and 0 tech and I'm like I don't understand what is this new realm of football you're entering into and how does this work for any of these guys? Like why are you drafting a Grayson Holton if you're going to be running 2 tech and 0 tech when that's a 3 tech, why'd you get a Diggy Zoo? So like maybe I'm over reading the five man front stuff but maybe it's,
[00:33:41] Speaker B: maybe it's a Mighty Ducks flying V where they're, they're all standing up and bobbing and Weaving before the snap and then when it snaps, you just, wherever you are, you go.
[00:33:50] Speaker A: Ironically, somewhat similar to how the Seattle Seahawks play defense, which is everyone's just sort of standing there and bobbing and then they just run straight ahead no matter where they're at. Also, Dick LeBeau's defense for the Pittsburgh Steelers back in the day. Fire blitzes.
Could be a great defensive line. I'm not sure if it's going to be a sack getting defensive line.
It'll be better than last year because. Almost impossible to be as bad as last year. Almost.
Almost.
But Digazoo, I should have five.
Like, he's awesome.
Bose is probably not getting double digits, but like, oh, Diggie Zua could lead
[00:34:31] Speaker B: the team in sacks.
[00:34:32] Speaker A: I think they'll have a lot of guys who have a handful.
And I think Romello Height could maybe even lead the team on like 20% of overall snaps. Because when he's in there, it's like, what else are you here to do? Absolutely.
[00:34:48] Speaker B: I, I get. Again, months ago, whenever we last talked, I gave you my potential. Hey, throw a dollar down on Romello Height for Rookie of the Year. No more but one dollar.
[00:35:00] Speaker A: A hundred American cents.
I, I think this is.
[00:35:04] Speaker B: Yeah, go ahead, C.J. west. I mean, what are we doing? We haven't even really talked about our beautiful boy.
[00:35:11] Speaker A: Put on some weight, has he?
[00:35:14] Speaker B: Or is he always just
[00:35:18] Speaker A: now we're in the. Are we operating in the quantum realm now? Who knows?
[00:35:22] Speaker B: I don't, I don't care. All I know is going to run somebody over. Yeah. And it's, it's gonna, it's gonna make me happy. I just enjoy watching the round mound of rebound play. Defensive tackle.
[00:35:35] Speaker A: I, I think that we're gonna see a hell of a lot of them in training camp and, and in the preseason. I, I know that that sounds ridiculous because he established himself as someone who could be counted on late last year, but given where they're at with, with.
Yeah, obviously you're going to see a lot of Eason, you're going to see a lot of Thompson, you're going to see a lot of Holton. Like that. That's the natural order of things. You're going to see Valdez, you're going to see Anderson until they cut Anderson, like. But I think you're going to see some west in there early, if not often.
And I'm curious to see where he's at because he's a really good player against the run.
He's not physically obvious in that regard.
So it's a little bit more of somebody that you have to watch the film a lot on and be like, hell yeah, brother. This is it.
A little more, a little more Puna
[00:36:30] Speaker B: Ford than it's, it's a lot of Rob Riggle and stepbrothers where he's like, he's like, are you saying power?
[00:36:36] Speaker A: Are you saying PA Catalina Wine Mixer?
[00:36:39] Speaker B: It's a lot of that. A lot of that.
[00:36:42] Speaker A: And with Collins being a complete unknown, I mean, it's really, it's really on west. They don't have another body like Collins and I'm curious to see how that manifests.
[00:36:53] Speaker B: Thompson's the closest thing.
[00:36:54] Speaker A: He doesn't, he's, he's, he doesn't have,
[00:36:56] Speaker B: he doesn't have the anchor or the leverage or the weight, but he does have size.
[00:37:02] Speaker A: They're going to cut a good player. Like, I, I will say this about their defense. There are a lot of top end questions and there's a lot of bottom end questions. And the latter part is a good thing. Like they're going to have to cut players that you're going to watch in camp and you're going to get reports from camp being like, this guy's looking good and then that guy's going to get cut before they get on a plane to Australia and people are going to get upset. And I think that that's a good sign that you have some depth on your roster in many ways. This isn't to say that they're in the same ballpark as the Rams right now, but the you look at the Rams roster and it is so top heavy.
They are niners 2023, 2024 level top heavy except probably even better.
And they are one injury to Devonte Adams away from like, oh, this isn't right at all. They're one offensive line injury away from like Quiz and Berry starting at left tackle. They're obviously one Matt Stafford injury away from the whole thing imploding. They might have to be a defense first team. The beauty of them is that their offense is unbelievable on top of all of it if healthy. Like, if you turn off injury sliders on Madden, they're winning it. That's not how the real world works, as evidenced by the Airstream out in Woodland Hills or wherever the hell they practice these days. So the Niners, we've, you and I have talked about this before. The Niners learned the lesson of having too top heavy of a roster and said, no, we will have depth from here on out as the Rams are like, we will go with right Nothing but top heaviness. And I'm curious to see which one of those two wins if either.
[00:38:35] Speaker B: The Niners are sort of like, we just need a bunch of guys because we're gonna fall apart.
[00:38:40] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:38:40] Speaker B: At some point.
[00:38:41] Speaker A: We can't move this substation. We need more bodies.
[00:38:45] Speaker B: Feels like their entire offense except for tight end, inexplicably, as we switch to that side of the ball.
[00:38:52] Speaker A: Where do you want to start? I want to start with.
[00:38:55] Speaker B: Okay, I want to start with tight end. Real quick.
[00:38:58] Speaker A: Did you see how George, George Kittle. Listen, I maintain everything that I've said. George Kittle was moving real well at Tight End University.
And I don't know what to do with that information.
Yeah, it doesn't make any goddamn sense.
[00:39:17] Speaker B: Well, does it? Doesn't it?
[00:39:20] Speaker A: Well, that's a conversation that we cannot have.
[00:39:22] Speaker B: We'll be left unsaid. Nothing more will be said on that. I think you know what I'm talking about.
[00:39:26] Speaker A: Peptides are not illegal, Jake. Let's just leave it at that.
[00:39:31] Speaker B: Yeah, he really wanted the smelling salts back anyway. Anyway. Yeah, I, I, listen, if he's, if he's, if Kittle looks great, then great.
[00:39:42] Speaker A: Just rubbing on it for blood flow.
[00:39:45] Speaker B: It's a dude coming back from an acl and behind him, I mean, if the guys behind him are just the guys behind him, it's fine.
[00:39:54] Speaker A: Right?
[00:39:54] Speaker B: Tonjas and Feral.
But man, Luke Farrell was absolutely atrocious. He was truly, he, I mean, the fact that they, it's, I mean, we talked about it. Charlie Kohler is going to be so awesome with the Chargers and it's just like the problem.
[00:40:10] Speaker A: I, I want to believe that. And yet I know how Jim Harbaugh chews up his tight ends.
[00:40:16] Speaker B: Yep.
[00:40:16] Speaker A: And it's like, oh, he's gonna, he's gonna kill my sweet boy Charlie Kohler immediately. I, I, I haven't, I, I can't even get into the mind space of like other teams and, and, and to be fair, like our next shows are going to be breaking down the Rams and the Seahawks. So like we'll have updates from camp and all that good stuff and we got some other good things that we want to talk about. But like also we'll do the whole of the NFL and we'll come up with a couple of takes and we'll preview it and all. But then we're just going to dive in on the Rams and the Seahawks. Sorry to the Cardinals. They probably deserve to be deep dived as well.
I'll give you, I'll give You a preview on a hot take here.
The hot take is the team that the Cardinals beat in division, finishes in third in the division.
[00:41:02] Speaker B: It's a great take. It's a great take.
[00:41:05] Speaker A: It's the only one.
[00:41:06] Speaker B: It's a. It's also.
[00:41:08] Speaker A: They should wear the tortilla jerseys in perpetuity.
[00:41:12] Speaker B: I kind of love that. It's a big year for.
How should I put this?
Mike LaFleur, that style haircut. And everyone on the packers, the sort of almost like your gym teacher in high school with like the army crop haircut. It's big year for that.
[00:41:31] Speaker A: It's, it's. It's the. My dad was in the military, but I'm a born again Christian haircut.
[00:41:36] Speaker B: Stolen valor. It's a major red flag for everyone involved and a bad sign for where the league is headed.
[00:41:43] Speaker A: It's a Nash. It's a Nashville haircut. Ironically, no one in Nashville currently has a haircut cut. They're all bald on that coaching staff.
[00:41:51] Speaker B: Interesting. They actually are. They.
[00:41:55] Speaker A: It's a big year for the dome. They're getting a dome on the stadium and nothing but domes from the coaching staff of the Tennessee Titans.
[00:42:01] Speaker B: Like that.
Okay, let's.
[00:42:03] Speaker A: Let's move.
[00:42:03] Speaker B: I mean, oh, by the way, Khalil Dinkins.
See ya.
Sorry.
[00:42:08] Speaker A: Well, like, as weird as this sounds, when they just cut Khalil Dinkins, I'm like, George Kittle must look incredible when they see him.
[00:42:16] Speaker B: Well, because he got hurt. It was an injury. Yeah.
[00:42:19] Speaker A: When. When did that happen? Like, I, I don't.
I guess he wasn't out there. I don't know. I'm just saying.
[00:42:25] Speaker B: Yeah, it is.
[00:42:26] Speaker A: It is. Like moving on from tight ends.
[00:42:30] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:42:31] Speaker A: If I have to mention the name Hayden Ricci at all in the next month and a half, we're at DEFCON 1. Like, that's a real.
[00:42:37] Speaker B: Yeah, I, Yeah, I'm just. I'm just a little bit annoyed at them and how they've handled tight end.
They went. We drafted George Kittle. We will never make another good move at that position as long as we shall live.
[00:42:51] Speaker A: You know, don't test fate. You know, you find the right one, you just lock it up and you put on the blinders for everybody else.
[00:42:58] Speaker B: Yeah, we did have that, that glorious Jordan Reed season where there were like, a couple flashes.
[00:43:05] Speaker A: I.
Yeah. My reputation will never recover from that Jordan Reed season because I was just convinced that they were going 12 personnel all year.
[00:43:13] Speaker B: They were. They just didn't stay healthy at the same time. They wanted to. They wanted to.
[00:43:19] Speaker A: They Sorry to. To deal with this now.
Yes. And by the way. Ooh, fancy graphics.
Yes. Dinkins was in fact cut. He was. They sent out an email and everything saying he's no longer with the football team. We don't want him.
[00:43:35] Speaker B: Dink has been dunked.
[00:43:37] Speaker A: Thank you.
I. I wanna, I wanna suggest this before we move on from tight ends.
[00:43:42] Speaker B: Suggest away.
[00:43:45] Speaker A: First off, 13 personnel is a false flag.
I think that you will be able to figure out which coaches suck based on how often they play 13 personnel in the first three or four weeks of the season before they realize like, oh, we can't do. There's not enough good.
[00:44:00] Speaker B: Right. The Rams did it because they had the right things and their tight ends weren't all really tight ends.
[00:44:07] Speaker A: Right.
[00:44:08] Speaker B: And they were like, we can do this.
[00:44:09] Speaker A: Sean McVeigh is like, what's my market advantage? I got like six tight ends. Damn it. We overdid it on the tight ends.
[00:44:16] Speaker B: And you know, you know, he's in the off season talking up his former projects and stuff. Like, dude, you guys can pull this off too.
[00:44:24] Speaker A: Yeah, you would. You're gonna love it. It's great. There's so many guys near the ball.
Yeah, you could definitely run the ball out of this formation, you guys.
It makes, it made sense as a throwing like an ethis pitch, right? But then if you go out there and you're like, I throw an ethis as my main pitch. That ain't gonna work.
It's a knuckleball, you know, it's like there's a reason there's no more knuckle ballers.
[00:44:51] Speaker B: Yeah, it's a little bit of Anthony Rizzo disrespect.
[00:44:54] Speaker A: But you see, you see our man Nick Friedle give Rizzo the ball the other day.
[00:44:59] Speaker B: I did not.
[00:45:01] Speaker A: Okay, so Rizzo just goes and hangs out in the bleachers now and it's this whole like, thing. He like takes his toddler. I don't understand the Cubs.
[00:45:11] Speaker B: He seems to have a great gig where he just sort of hangs out at games. And occasionally they're like, rizzo, what do you see? He's like, I don't know, he's.
[00:45:18] Speaker A: He's pretty nice, folks. Having some Budweisers out here.
Yeah, he's just an affable gentleman from South Florida who is handsome enough to, you know, passes really handsome in Chicago. And so I say this as Chicagoan. And so, yeah, he's in the bleachers. It's like the 10 year anniversary of the goddamn Cubs winning the goddamn World Series. And as A White Sox fan. I'm not happy about it. And it's great for my city, but terrible for my soul. And they hit a home run out to. To right field, and it's near Rizzo and his toddler, who's just a normal kid. There's no, like, story behind the top, right? It's just his kid. Like, he doesn't have special needs or anything. It's not some heartwarming story. It's just a man and his child go to baseball game, and so the ball, you know, falls between because everyone's too drunk to actually catch it on the fly. And who comes up with it but our man Nick Friedle. And you could hear him just.
You can hear it. He catches it, and Rizzo's right in front of me. He just hands it to Rizzo and it's like this heartwarm. It was headlined, like, heartwarming. And it's like, how is this heartwarming? He's just Zach Hampling this thing.
So.
[00:46:28] Speaker B: Oh, man, I saw a recent video that. That guy's still out there, by the way, just on the loose.
[00:46:33] Speaker A: You want to talk about stolen valor? That guy. That guy. Actually, you know what? They should keep that guy out on the loose, because if I ever lose my job, I'm just going to make it my mission I to go and elbow him.
[00:46:45] Speaker B: Isn't it?
It's rare that you can still find people where you're like, oh, you were given a swirly and it didn't end. Not. Not a long enough one, apparently.
Big, big. Oh, yeah.
[00:47:02] Speaker A: Your parents didn't like talking to you.
[00:47:05] Speaker B: They're like, go outside, man. Go outside. He's like, I caught another ball, dad. He's like, don't. Yeah, I'm not coming back.
[00:47:10] Speaker A: No, you'll never. You'll never get my affection or love that dude.
That dude definitely has poop stains in his underwear.
So let's talk about wide receivers.
Oh, sorry. No, the other point. The other point I was going to make is I think that they're going to do a lot of the 21 to 12 swap. I think that they're going to be using.
I don't even know what that means.
[00:47:40] Speaker B: Neither do I. It's just. It really. It really hit hard.
[00:47:43] Speaker A: Remember, for four months, level sicko message, Larry Linguini.
Who the hell knows?
[00:47:52] Speaker B: Unfortunately, it will. I will only be able to think of Larry's Larry Linguini now.
[00:47:58] Speaker A: So when Larry finally quits and opens up his Italian restaurant in Walnut Creek, Larry Linguini, that is. And you can see way too flop art.
Okay, I'm sorry. We need to get back on track. Zach Campbell stains all the above for Dell. Oh, man. Dieter.
[00:48:19] Speaker B: Oh, man.
[00:48:23] Speaker A: I, I, I. As much as the Tanjis and feral of it all concern me. Like, I think tan just probably is underrated a little bit. I think we maybe got a little bit overexposed.
And we're like, oh, actually he's not that good at blocking. It's like, yeah, no one needed him to be like, right, there's, there's something there.
[00:48:40] Speaker B: Souped up Ross Dwelly. That's all it is.
[00:48:42] Speaker A: That's right. Ross Dwelly was a functional human in that office.
[00:48:46] Speaker B: The best hands I've ever seen on the 49ers. And that's not a joke.
[00:48:51] Speaker A: They're beautiful. Beautifully manicured. He was like David Duchovny in Zoolander as a hand model.
Luke Farrell can't be as bad as he was last year in theory.
We'll find out. We'll find out.
And he was like a decent enough player. Like, not worth the contract they gave him when they gave it to him, but decent enough player.
[00:49:13] Speaker B: And then they sold me like a fool that he was going to be really good. They're like, no, we're actually smarter than everyone else. And I went, I'll take your word for it. And they were wrong.
[00:49:23] Speaker A: You watched the tape and it was, it was the.
[00:49:26] Speaker B: I don't see it, but maybe I'm an idiot.
[00:49:29] Speaker A: Her. Her. Really Her.
So it can't be that bad.
Kittle, I guess, is just unbelievable. Just legitimately and we'll find out. We get to Australia and it's like, oh, no, this is, this is not good. This is bad. But I am, I'm extremely curious. I think they're just going to be using. Use check a lot as a tight end. As the second tight end on the
[00:49:55] Speaker B: field, it just right everyone to know as well.
[00:50:02] Speaker A: Which, which one is that?
[00:50:04] Speaker B: Which he wants everybody to know that they. I actually get used as a tight end a lot. Your life's great, Kyle. Relax.
[00:50:12] Speaker A: Yeah, not only that, but also it's like, you should franchise tag me as a tight end.
I have seen the numbers. They're going to be a lot better for me than fullback, which I do believe is a distinct position. Wide receiver. Jake, they got Mike Evans, which is weird. It's weird to say.
Yeah, Uncomfortable, frankly. He good. He good, though. I don't know if he's gonna play that much, but he good.
They have Ricky Pearsall, who a bad omen if I'm being honest, I've started to see some.
Some Ricky Pearsall out to prove the doubters wrong. It's like no one's doubting Ricky Pearsall. They have no evidence. Well, they used to when he was a rookie. And then he gets into his sophomore year and it's like, well, I don't know.
[00:50:58] Speaker B: Yeah, no, I think a lot of people mistake injuries for being bad.
[00:51:02] Speaker A: Right. And then let's be clear about this with Pearsall, like one, he is moving to his true position of the position they drafted him to play, which is Z, because Mike Evans is the ax.
He's in his third year, which means that they have to make a fifth year option decision on him by the end of the year.
Like, I'm not saying it's now or never, but we're real close to now or never with Ricky Pierce. All like, if they're not picking up that option, he's not on the team next year, full stop.
[00:51:36] Speaker B: Yeah, I mean, I would disagree with that a little bit, but it does get a little weird. Like, if he doesn't produce, they get into weird territory.
Wide receiver group is like, I kind of forgot Christian Kirk is on the team now.
[00:51:52] Speaker A: And it's good that he is because he can be both a slot and the backup Z and give you a nice, nice quality. Nothing special, but like functional.
[00:52:02] Speaker B: It was a little bit like, do they need him? And you're like, it's pretty nice to have him.
[00:52:05] Speaker A: I mean, like, when your options are Ricky Pearsall and Mike Evans. Yeah, you probably need them.
[00:52:10] Speaker B: Ricky Pearsall, Mike Evans, Christian Kirk Stribling, DeMarcus Robinson, who again, could be on the chopping block. And it's just like a bunch of guys who are a bunch of maybes, you know, in Jordan Watkins, Jacob Cowing.
[00:52:23] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:52:24] Speaker B: And then there's a whole other tier of guys who just won't make it. But.
[00:52:27] Speaker A: Well, I will say that Will Pauling has a better shot than most for returning ability.
[00:52:34] Speaker B: Totally.
[00:52:35] Speaker A: I don't think that it gets there. I don't think that he's so much better that they'll be like, yeah, Will Pauling, we're gonna keep him on the roster because again, yeah, you're right. DeMarcus Robinson, who we should be clear.
They just gave away his number without asking and then gave him the cursed seven. That has nothing to do with Colin Kaepernick. It's just that they give that they don't want that number out on the field all that often. Let's just put it that way.
[00:52:57] Speaker B: I will say don't love a starting wide receiver lineup. That's very college style where, where they're all wearing single digits. Oh, number five for Evans, number one. Pierce are wearing one and number three for Kirk.
[00:53:14] Speaker A: Kirk three makes sense. Slot receivers I don't mind having but
[00:53:19] Speaker B: nobody wearing a number in the 80s.
[00:53:22] Speaker A: The fact it doesn't even add up to 10. You're starting three receivers.
[00:53:26] Speaker B: Malik Turner is the only one wearing 81.
[00:53:29] Speaker A: I mean Junior Bergen's out there in 86.
[00:53:33] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah.
[00:53:34] Speaker A: We need to bring, we need to normalize numbers in the 80s again.
It's, it's, it'll come how it should come back, kids.
[00:53:42] Speaker B: It's how it should be.
[00:53:43] Speaker A: It's cyclical.
[00:53:44] Speaker B: Sports are doing too many different things changing all the numbers and indoor football and domes.
[00:53:53] Speaker A: Thought you were referencing the AFL there for a second.
We're going to get there. Don't start me. We'll do our worst takes of the year.
Just I will stand on this mountain show at some point here and we all know where I stand when it comes to indoor football.
I, I'm very bullish on stripling. For what it's worth, I think that he immediately comes in and is slot receiver on third down just straight Juwan Jennings and I think there's going to be plenty of opportunity for him early in the year in both X, Z and flank to get reps because Pearsall is not an every down player. I don't think they're going to want to. I think they'd like Evans to be out there every down but at a certain point you got to be careful about it. And then I don't know if Kirk is going to demand the kind of snaps that Stribling could take from him.
[00:54:50] Speaker B: Stribling is. I feel immensely confident that the people who don't watch the film will I would say about four or five weeks into the season when he's not producing that much will be like so what's going on with him? And without question, Kyle Shanahan will be like well, are you watching the tape? Like he's blocking really well.
He's running some clear outs that are setting up some almost.
I believe that with every fiver my being that he will be doing all of the nitty gritty stuff early and often in this season in a way a rookie usually wouldn't.
[00:55:29] Speaker A: That's fundamental to him playing like we talk about the Kyle Shanahan year. One thing. Why is it that they don't play rookie Receivers. Not because they can't catch the ball, not because they don't know the routes. The route stuff isn't that complicated. It's because they don't know how to do the nitty gritty. They don't know how to do all the little things that Kyle Shanahan expects, which is toughness, to be sure, but also like reach blocks from wide receivers.
And it's all tape.
[00:56:00] Speaker B: They're gonna have him do some Puka stuff. Yeah. I.
[00:56:04] Speaker A: And it's.
This is where we're at.
I can't kind of break the idea and it's blasphemous. I know that stribling turns into like Puka Nakua just from the jump that he is just. You're running dagger routes with him and Evans and that's Nakua and Adams and I don't know where Ricky fits in on this, but like there's something that tells me that he doesn't just hit the ground running, that he just is awesome from the jump clip it. Don't give a damn. The tape is too damn clean.
The zeal in which I know the Rams were in on him was too much.
[00:56:45] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:56:45] Speaker A: To kind of overlook.
[00:56:46] Speaker B: And when IU gets back from injury, it's gonna be, I mean, just an embarrassment of riches.
[00:56:52] Speaker A: Not talking about America's number one commander's content creator.
I'll throw. I'll throw this at you too. Jordan Watkins is the backup X this year. I'm not saying it's going to turn into anything, but it might not be like I wouldn't, I wouldn't totally upend your depth chart if like Evans goes out with a hamstring injury. Because I do think that one Stribling is just going to hit the ground running as a third receiver slot guy jumping in a lot. So maybe he plays some X in the same way that you want Jennings played X. But also I think Watkins is a true clear out guy.
Is something there. I'll also note that like Wesley Grimes be fast.
[00:57:33] Speaker B: He does.
[00:57:35] Speaker A: What do you guys.
[00:57:37] Speaker B: Yeah, I mean Watkins, I did have
[00:57:39] Speaker A: a little bit of like.
[00:57:41] Speaker B: He's interesting. He's interesting. And then Grimes, Pauline was like the guy that we're like, you know, punt returner. I don't know if he can do anything else. He's just a slot guy.
Grimes did some interesting stuff.
He's.
He's not clean as a route runner, but if you put the ball in his hands on a tunnel screen, he
[00:58:01] Speaker A: can, he can get moving loopy to say the least. This man has Never seen a right angle.
But then there's cowing. I mean, I. I imagine that cowing will have a nice camp, and it just kind of doesn't matter.
[00:58:16] Speaker B: I refuse to believe Robinson.
[00:58:19] Speaker A: Yeah, I mean, that's. That's probably where it's at.
Running back, it's Christian McCaffrey. It's Jordan James, it's Kalon Black, it's Patrick Taylor. Again, I don't believe Isaac Rando exists, nor does sincere McCormick.
[00:58:38] Speaker B: Yeah, I.
I want to see Kalon Black, and I think he's gonna play this year.
[00:58:43] Speaker A: I think he's gonna play early.
I think he's their third down, short yardage, change of pace back. Whereas I think that Jordan James maintains the status of, like, full on Christian McCaffrey backup.
[00:58:58] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:58:58] Speaker A: Like, so Kaylin Black's a role player.
Jordan James is a backup. There's a distinct difference. And we might get a lot of Jordan James and Kalon Black, but, like, Kalon Black has a role on day one. Jordan James needs an injury to find a lot of carries.
[00:59:15] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:59:16] Speaker A: How do you feel about Kalon Black as a fantasy option?
[00:59:20] Speaker B: Ooh, tepid.
Lukewarm.
And I ain't talking about feral.
[00:59:28] Speaker A: No, you aren't, Farrell.
[00:59:31] Speaker B: Yeah, I.
I have trouble imagining where he will get enough unless McCaffrey goes out.
And then it will take a few weeks for them to be like, all right, we need to just give it to James. I mean, give it to Black. James isn't doing it.
[00:59:46] Speaker A: Maybe. Yeah.
But there is much hype on James that I'm.
[00:59:52] Speaker B: If he gets like, yeah, if. If. If Black sort of gets enough, I. I mean, the upside, I think, is pretty huge. And I think he'll be cheap.
[01:00:02] Speaker A: I'll give you that. I'll give you that.
That's the, that's the rotation, though. I mean, they're going to be signing someone off the street if they need to go any deeper than that.
On the, on the depth chart use check fits in on that as well. I imagine dash motion is going to be from the jump and in fundamental to their offense. I got no problem with that.
Christian McCaffrey had more than 400 touches last year over under 315 this year. Yeah, way under 215.
Under 150.
Here's a more effective way to ask this question, Jake. How many touches do you think Christian McCaffrey gets this year? As opposed to be dropping it down by.
[01:00:54] Speaker B: No, under, under, over, over, under is more fun. I'm gonna say 168.
[01:01:00] Speaker A: Wow. And a half.
It's
[01:01:05] Speaker B: I.
[01:01:06] Speaker A: He wasn't effective last year. I didn't see the juice.
I know that everyone's actually was really good and this. No, he wasn't. He averaged less than 4 yards a carry. He. It was the offensive line. Yeah, a little bit. It was also him not having the explosion to get through the gaps anymore. So I have no idea what.
[01:01:26] Speaker B: 2019, 287 carries. Following year, 59. 20, 23, 272 carries. Next year, 50. Like, there is a very clear track record of him having these great seasons with immense usage rates. Yeah.
And then his body failing him the following year.
[01:01:50] Speaker A: Terribly logical statement. But you did say having great seasons. And that's not what Christian McCaffrey had last year. He just had a.
A lot of touches, touch the ball a lot. That doesn't mean it was great. A lot of times it felt like it wasn't a great play.
So I'm.
Listen, they have to. They went all in on two effective rookie running backs as his backup.
Either that means they really trust him or they really don't trust him. I don't know. I'm very curious. Very.
[01:02:22] Speaker B: If we're being honest, I should be hammering the under on anything over 100 because.
[01:02:29] Speaker A: Oh, yeah.
[01:02:29] Speaker B: Again, going back to 2019, when he led the league, he had 76. The next year, when he had 339 in 2023, it was 65 total. He had 413 touches last year. He's not large.
He's 30.
[01:02:46] Speaker A: No, but he works out so hard.
As if that has anything to do with it.
Like, as if he's not. He didn't have 413 car crashes last year.
[01:02:59] Speaker B: There's no world in which I can.
[01:03:01] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah, he's uninsurable.
And, And. And you're not even getting as much juice out of the squeeze anymore like it used to be. You give Christian McCaffrey 413 touches like he's winning MVP or he's in the conversation. And last year he wasn't in the conversation. He had 413 touches and they won games.
But did it feel like Christian McCaffrey carried them? Like. No. Like Mac Jones feels like he deserved more credit. And Purdy certainly down the stretch.
[01:03:32] Speaker B: I mean, I do think he was great last year, but it's not. It wasn't the. Oh, my God, this is the greatest player I've ever seen by anything.
[01:03:40] Speaker A: He did set a pretty high ball bar. He did set a pretty high bar. So, you know, if Rashad White had done what he did last year, we'd be talking up Rashad White like crazy.
[01:03:48] Speaker B: And do you want to talk about quarterback or do you want to talk about.
[01:03:53] Speaker A: I absolutely do.
For this reason, in this reason alone, I'm fascinated to see Adrian Martinez vs. Curtis Rourke. Because if OTAs are any indication, Adrian Martinez is a better quarterback.
You talk to NFL coaches, especially quarterback guys, they'll tell you that seven on sevens and 11 on elevens, like matters like that is incredibly indicative. In the same way you would want to know how a point guard practices in basketball. Like how does he make these passes? Like being able to see the field, recognize, you know, get through your progressions, all this stuff. Yes. It's not with a live rush or anything like that, but if you can't do that against a non live rush, you can't do it against a live rush.
Curtis Rourke throws a lot of duck balls. A lot of them. A lot of them that go just straight into the ground. It's wild to watch.
That's like a legitimate battle and I don't think either of them make the roster. But like in a weird twisted. I gotta think about something way like Adrian Martinez vs. Curtis Rourke might be fun.
[01:04:56] Speaker B: It's interesting. I'm genuinely interested. I mean they talked up Curtis Rourke. Like they're like, oh, we found something here.
[01:05:02] Speaker A: Yeah.
[01:05:02] Speaker B: So I wanna, I wanna see it. I wanna see it.
[01:05:05] Speaker A: Do you think it's gonna be the same thing as George Kittle or even Fred? They actually drafted good linebackers in Aziz and in Greenlaw and all that. But like with Kittle, do you think that Brock Purdy is like the kiddle of quarterbacks where they did it once and then they're like, actually we're so good at this and they're never gonna get anyone who's.
[01:05:26] Speaker B: Yeah, I think I wouldn't be surprised. That feels in that vein. Yeah.
[01:05:30] Speaker A: Thank God they can always get in a backup who's looking to write, rewrite history and right the wrongs of the past. Thank God.
[01:05:38] Speaker B: I mean that still exists. Truly, that is the most.
The best thing Kyle Shanahan has done for their roster building is prove that. Like, hey, are you. Were you once a maybe good quarterback? Do you want to play for free? We have a spot.
[01:05:53] Speaker A: Yeah, it's.
We'll see how well it works for Mac Jones. When that comp pick hits offensive line, they're going to go with Connor Colby at left guard. The other positions are locked in.
I might even have to put a moratorium on Jake Brendel's name. Apparently it's like too Triggering.
It might be. I might have to mute it on Twitter or something. Like, people just can't. They're just like Brendel. Just vitriol. It's like a political name almost like, oh, just that guy.
[01:06:23] Speaker B: You know, it almost reminds me of. Do you remember when inexplicably people like hated Anne Hathaway
[01:06:33] Speaker A: or people pretended as if the word moist was disgusting to listen to?
[01:06:37] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:06:38] Speaker A: Do you.
[01:06:38] Speaker B: It was sort of like we collectively really chosen because this thing like kind of annoys us a little bit and we've seen too much of it and it won't go away.
[01:06:52] Speaker A: Keep looking at Anne Hathaway, but that's neither here.
[01:06:55] Speaker B: It's completely changed. The narrative has completely flipped. She's now well loved and she did nothing.
[01:07:01] Speaker A: She just kept being Anne Hathaway. God bless her. Yeah, I don't know. We're gonna get there with Jake Brendel, for whatever it's worth.
[01:07:10] Speaker B: No, you know what? The most interesting thing to me when I look at this group is so Darien Lao where I'm like, that's a huge pickup.
[01:07:20] Speaker A: Absolutely. Absolutely.
They didn't.
They literally were playing dudes. They signed off the street at tackle in the past two years.
[01:07:32] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:07:33] Speaker A: And it worked okay. Like shockingly okay.
[01:07:36] Speaker B: Right.
[01:07:36] Speaker A: It's still not acceptable.
[01:07:38] Speaker B: Again. Again, Chris. That's Chris. First year's bread and butter. He's like, give me someone who's dog and I will make them survive.
[01:07:48] Speaker A: Like, Trent Williams is not giving you 17 games. He's just not.
Would love to see it not happening.
[01:07:56] Speaker B: That ankle's going to go at some point and he's going to battle through it. What they would. Honestly, there's an argument to that. You should just load. Manage with Trent Williams.
[01:08:09] Speaker A: They might.
[01:08:09] Speaker B: Where you should choose a game where you're either going to get smoked or where you're going to blow somebody out and say, Trent, you're done after the first half.
[01:08:17] Speaker A: I mean, there is. There might be something to that, but there will be something that happens with Trent Williams to where it's like, I've got to miss a week or two and then, you know, week three is feeling a little longer. Maybe we just take it all the way to the buy.
And Lao is in there. And Lao looks total. You just forget Laos in there, right? Yeah. Still a black guy on the left end. Like, whatever. It's not visually jarring at all.
I also, I mean just Trent's. Trent is getting like.
Trent is one of the all time great football players, full stop. Not just of his Position and athletes. Yeah, but this is not prime Trent Williams. This is subprime late.
He's better than a lot, but he ain't the best anymore.
[01:09:08] Speaker B: Last year was the first real yikes year I've seen from and it still turned out to be a great year because he's Trent Williams and he can have. And a bad year for him is better than 95% of people.
[01:09:21] Speaker A: Well, also the threshold for quality at those positions has diminished so much and we see it almost inverse relationship with then the money that's spent in free agency where people are paying out the ears for minor quality. But enough about Adrian Hauser and the giants.
Colton McKivitz also you have to, you have to have some hedge there in that he's been remarkably durable.
You can't count on durability on the offensive line. You also don't know what you have. I mean, I don't know what they're going to do with Cruz. I just, I have no earthly idea.
Carver is more is a guard. You still have Austin Pleasants, that's fine. But like Nick Sa. Kelge can't play there. You don't want to play. Like they've made it pretty clear they don't want to play Brandon Parker. They would rather sign me than play Brandon Parker.
They, they like Brandon Parker. They'll like pay him, but they do not want to play him. He's there strictly for hanging out in the team meeting.
[01:10:25] Speaker B: You're just hanging out in the media room and they're like, dieter, you're gonna have to strap it up, buddy.
We need.
[01:10:30] Speaker A: How much money would it. Yeah, it's. That would cost a lot of money. That would cost more than the league minimum. It might be like $10 over the league minimum because I would die.
[01:10:39] Speaker B: They would have to provide, they would have to provide you with.
What's the ten year thing where you, if you hit ten years, you start. You get like eternal health insurance. They have to give you that up front immediately.
[01:10:53] Speaker A: Yeah. Also like I have done my will, my first call would be to my lawyers to be like, we need to make sure that that will is ironclad. Do we need to do any irrevocable trusts? Because we need to move some money around right now, right? You would die. You would. You would be dead within a second. They would crack you in half.
[01:11:13] Speaker B: Well, no, I know. This is why every time I see a wide receiver who's my size, I go, what are you doing?
[01:11:19] Speaker A: Yeah, I don't love the. I don't love a lot of the depth right now on the offensive line outside of Lao, I guess you could play Pleasants in a pinch. Hopefully you don't need two tackles.
[01:11:32] Speaker B: Brett Toth did play for the Eagles a bit.
[01:11:37] Speaker A: Yeah, I. Ironically, I feel okay about center. I feel like they have like five options at center and I like Robert Jones, like Colby or Jones. One of them is going to be fine, but I have no idea what Willis is. I don't know how Nick Sekel still has a job. Sorry. Like, it's dickish thing to say, but, like, don't understand it.
Yeah, Cruz is a.
Cruz could end up being awesome. He feels like we never. He never played football. We have to teach him the game. Like international pipeline guy. He was a spot player for Kansas last year.
Right.
Sorry, man. Like, I get that he real fast. Like the Kansas coaches who.
[01:12:19] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:12:19] Speaker A: Can't believe I'm saying this. Competent fellers who know some offensive linemen were like, yeah, we can't play this guy every snap. That'd be ridiculous.
[01:12:29] Speaker B: Yeah. What a weird draft. What a very strange, awful draft.
[01:12:35] Speaker A: Fascinated to see the Nuge. We're going to see a lot of the Nuge, having laid eyes on the Nuge in the not so recent past, or recent past, depending on how you want to view two months ago.
Thicker.
A sturdier Nuge.
[01:12:50] Speaker B: There's a world where he plays this year. There's also a world where next year he's on the coaching staff.
[01:12:55] Speaker A: Yeah, maybe. Maybe he's the assistant. He's taking on the. The John Lynch's son role of just getting beat up by defensive lineman.
[01:13:03] Speaker B: Because here's the thing. Chris Firster loves him and coached. Coached his dad, I want to say. Played with his dad. Played with his dad.
[01:13:11] Speaker A: Wow. There we go.
[01:13:13] Speaker B: There you go.
[01:13:13] Speaker A: I believe Stanford, Michigan, good pedigree there.
I'm also curious if the Nuge can play guard. He might get some opportunities in. In the preseason to play some guard.
[01:13:25] Speaker B: Well, again, the. Chris. The Chris Firster line was.
You would think he wouldn't be able to do it, but he's actually not as terrible as you'd expect.
It's actually.
And you're like, yeah, I would expect it to be pretty bad, but all right.
[01:13:43] Speaker A: And then we get to the most important of all the subsections of a football team, which is special teams.
And let me just preface it by saying they need to be elite on special teams this year.
They have. It's kind of like the bullpen in baseball. Like, you might think you have a good team if you got a Crappy bullpen. Your team ain't that good. Shout out the Giants, who are not that good at anything else, but they definitely don't have a good bullpen.
I know that there are very good teams. The Niners have been one of them in the past that can get by with crap special teams. Not when you're going up against arguably the two best teams in football in your own division. You have to be number one in the league. And there, I think, forgive me, I think they were third in EPA on special teams last year, but 12th in DVOA. And you might go, how is that possible? Basically, teams missed a lot of field goals against them, and so it created this EPA disparity. They were kind of average.
[01:14:44] Speaker B: Yeah. You were kind of like, well, they're statistically in one way outstanding. But it was also like, Eddie Piniera also never missed a field goal, so that helped.
[01:14:53] Speaker A: And the one he missed was his most impressive kick of the year.
[01:14:56] Speaker B: Yeah, it was outstanding.
[01:14:57] Speaker A: Right in the middle.
[01:15:00] Speaker B: I've said it many times. I've never seen a kicker who kicks a ball as straight.
Yeah. As him. Every time it's in a direct straight line. It's almost like a toe ball.
I have to mention Jack Boo Meester, who just. I think we said it almost the second they signed him, like, oh, yeah, that's their punter, and we'll see. But, like, I'm. I weirdly have an immense amount of confidence in him just being a good punter for them based on almost nothing.
[01:15:31] Speaker A: No, his tape's good. His tapes. I don't know if his tape is like, Michael Dixon good. Like, Michael Dix. I remember the Michael Dixon tape in Texas. And you're like, holy crap, this guy's a. I mean, immediately you're like, weapon. Which is the ultimate compliment for a punter.
I don't know if Bo Meester is a weapon, but I feel like he's a more consistent.
He's got a big leg. I think it's a more. It's a pretty consistent leg. Like.
[01:15:59] Speaker B: Yeah, he's not. He's not a legatron. He's.
[01:16:02] Speaker A: Yeah, no, he's more of like, when.
[01:16:06] Speaker B: When they were lying to us about Wisnowski and said they had a lot of tools in his bag. Yeah, he actually does.
[01:16:12] Speaker A: I think he's got a couple directions. I think that he's got about 10 more yards than Wish Now Ski. I think he's just a more consistent, leaner Wish Now Ski.
[01:16:21] Speaker B: He also seems cooler. Wish Now Ski was always, like, shockingly boring for an Aussie.
[01:16:26] Speaker A: A little. A little bit of a prick too, though.
[01:16:29] Speaker B: Yeah. I don't know what. I don't know what the deal is with him. You're just like, hey, what's going on? I don't know.
[01:16:33] Speaker A: I love talking punting. It's not like I, you know, not like I can do what they do, but like.
[01:16:39] Speaker B: Well, you know what it is? I think punters know that the less I talk, the better, which is, hey, that's probably right. Did you like that? Did you like the tame Impala? Aussie. Aussie.
[01:16:48] Speaker A: You know, I mean, there's something.
It's. It's a deep hole and I'll give you a point for it.
I. No, I want my punter to be bizarrely popular. I don't need to go. I don't need to, you know, go full Colts, but like, I, I want to have a little quirk in the punter and we'll find out. We'll find out.
Corliss Weightman might be waiting in line for another job. Oh, man, thank you.
Pinero's back. No way that backfires.
How do you not feel bad juju about guy you signed? I feel stress. Then give him a four year deal after. He is unbelievable, to be fair. But like the four year deal, it's like, whoa, we got a little overconfident there, boys, huh?
[01:17:44] Speaker B: They went, all right.
Kyle hates special teams.
This is the option. We are going with the option. This is.
[01:17:52] Speaker A: Yes. I mean, I, I don't. I don't get it. John Weeks is back. A beautiful fire hydrant.
[01:17:57] Speaker B: Oh, yes.
[01:17:57] Speaker A: Just snarfing food in the corner.
[01:17:59] Speaker B: When he's done, I'm done.
He goes, I go.
[01:18:03] Speaker A: I kind of feel that way about some other players on the team. I was like, I'm not. I can't do another generation. I can't do it. It's been 10 years. And then.
Okay, so the question is, who's going to return punts?
I have no earthly idea.
[01:18:20] Speaker B: Pauling is like my gut and that's a very weak feeling.
[01:18:26] Speaker A: I have not seen Junior Bergen. I'm not sure Junior Bergen is real.
[01:18:33] Speaker B: Hey, I was just in big sky country where he played ball.
I don't know. I don't know how they focused enough on the football to watch him actually play because it's you.
[01:18:43] Speaker A: Just the sunsets and you go, wow, it's Jacob Robinson.
Stout. Stout feels aggressive.
[01:18:54] Speaker B: I want to see Adrian Martinez back there.
[01:18:57] Speaker A: Now we're talking. Got bigger. Got bigger.
[01:19:00] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:19:01] Speaker A: Jordan James maybe feels a bit Much there.
I will say this. On kick returns, it will probably be James and Black, but Wesley Grimes is going to return one in the preseason.
He's returning the kick in the preseason. Wesley Grimes has a chance to be a legitimately awesome kick returner. The problem is that's not a job in the NFL in 2026.
It's just not. You can't be a solely kick return player. There are no Dante Halls left. You also have to be able to return putts. I don't want him returning punts. He doesn't have sharp enough lines. So I.
I legitimately don't know. I have no earthly idea. Jordan Walk is like. Jordan Watkins might be too lanky to return punts. They might just go with a Trent Taylor. Just fair catch this thing.
[01:19:52] Speaker B: Christian Kirk or he retired.
[01:19:55] Speaker A: Yeah, well, more, more time.
[01:19:57] Speaker B: What a player, George. What a player.
[01:19:59] Speaker A: Yet he'll still be out there in training camp. He'll just be like, is that Trent?
[01:20:03] Speaker B: He's on coach. He's on the coaching staff.
[01:20:06] Speaker A: Yeah.
No one.
[01:20:08] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:20:09] Speaker A: Even Kyle.
[01:20:10] Speaker B: Trent Taylor's just. George Kittle's like, was it Alex Guerreros?
I've got my own guy and it's Trent Taylor.
He just keeps.
[01:20:23] Speaker A: He just keeps his body man.
[01:20:26] Speaker B: Ross Dwelly.
Yeah.
Yeah. He just brings him in it. Honestly, it'd be nice, you know?
[01:20:33] Speaker A: Yeah.
[01:20:34] Speaker B: Give back.
[01:20:35] Speaker A: Why not? He's probably got the condo still.
You know, Nick Martin as a fullback, kick returner. You've heard worse ideas. You've heard worse ideas. Not sure if he can catch. We'll find out.
[01:20:46] Speaker B: I mean, here's the thing. Why isn't anyone tried that where you just have one guy return and one guy in front of them. Just runs like a battery and ram like, low Neil.
Shout out. My guy o'.
[01:20:57] Speaker A: Neal. Shout out.
[01:21:00] Speaker B: Great guy. Just also just kind of a total sweetheart. I've done a couple radio shows with him. The ultimate sweetheart.
[01:21:06] Speaker A: The nicest feller you would think.
[01:21:07] Speaker B: You would think. You know, I'm talking to him, I'm like, he's like earnestly listening to my takes. I'm like, you played. You're like a borderline hall of Famer. Low.
[01:21:15] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah. When you think about fullbacks, you think about Low Neil probably first.
[01:21:19] Speaker B: What a guy.
[01:21:21] Speaker A: Yeah, we love o'. Neal.
They used to do that for what it's worth, and then they realized that they were one man short on the line and a lot of punts were getting blocked, so they stopped doing that.
[01:21:36] Speaker B: Yeah, that's right.
[01:21:37] Speaker A: As someone who played Madden 98, let me tell you it was an option.
And if you watch some old NFL, by the way, a little homework assignment for everybody, flip on a 2003 NFL game on YouTube and tell me how those were the good old days compared to what we played today. The they had 285 pound linebackers like was boring.
Not good.
[01:22:05] Speaker B: Yeah, but you also had beautiful, beautiful Jamal Lewis.
[01:22:11] Speaker A: You did have Jamal Lewis. I mean I just checked.
[01:22:14] Speaker B: I just checked. That was the 2000 you yard season for him. Yeah, his. Yeah. I mean maybe not the best guy. Maybe not the best guy, but
[01:22:27] Speaker A: don't leave me down that line. But man, I, I don't think they'll throw Pierce all back there. I think maybe Kirk Cowing Cowing better. How about this? If Jacob Cowing wants to make this team.
[01:22:39] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:22:40] Speaker A: I can think of two ways to do it. Being really good at kick returns. Being really good at punt returns.
Pretty straightforward because they have too many wide receivers and if he doesn't do that, he has no job here.
[01:22:53] Speaker B: I'm with you Brad Jones at the bottom. As we start to take comments before we get out of here.
I really hope it's a Dante Pettis reference.
[01:23:06] Speaker A: What are we seeing here? What are we seeing?
[01:23:08] Speaker B: Our punt returner may not be on our team right now, but might have been on it before. Bring back Dante Pettis.
[01:23:14] Speaker A: Yes, it's, it's. There is a lot of people and I'm honestly not even against the concept saying bring back Debo.
The negative on bringing back Debo is that Kyle can't help himself. It's like my fat ass having cookies in the house. You can't. Like I'm just gonna eat them all. Just gonna eat them all. You can't have it in the house.
Kyle has Debo anywhere around him. He's just gonna get the ball to Debo.
[01:23:39] Speaker B: He.
[01:23:39] Speaker A: And now everything has gone to hell because he just has. It's an addiction. He can't stop it. It's brutal.
So I don't, I, I don't think that that serves Debo. I don't think that it serves the 49ers if someone gets injured. A lot more reasonable. And again if they do it, I'm not going to tell him it's a bad idea. It's just precarious.
He would be a kick ass kick returner though. Punt returner.
It's been a minute. Don't think he's done it at all at the NFL if he did it South Carolina a little bit.
[01:24:09] Speaker B: It's tough to see a quote from him that says, I still have three or four good years left. It's.
[01:24:16] Speaker A: That's what I tell myself every morning.
[01:24:19] Speaker B: I've long said that.
I've long said that if you call someone, if you tell somebody they smell, there's no coming back from it because they either go, no, I don't. And it's like, it sounds like, dude, I mean, it seems like you're getting a little defensive, or you do in fact smell, and it's sort of like, no, I got three or four years good left.
Good years left.
[01:24:41] Speaker A: I don't know, man. Give me another. Give me another shot, Jake. I got a couple.
[01:24:44] Speaker B: It's tough. It's tough that Debo's turned into a meme because, again, truly, like, one of my favorite football players of all time and just.
[01:24:53] Speaker A: But he was here for a good time, not for a long time.
[01:24:55] Speaker B: Took the words right out of my mouth. Yeah.
[01:24:57] Speaker A: I'll also say this not inspiring. When Debo puts out, like, a trailer of his workouts and it's him complaining about having to work out, it's like, man, these workouts are tough. And it's like, I. Yeah, I get it. I'm sure they are. Maybe we leave that one on the editing floor. Just maybe we tell our guy. Like, maybe. Don't make it sound like I don't enjoy what I'm doing.
Like, just. Just a thought. Why don't we do more cuts of me looking fast and lean?
We're trying to sell ourselves here and not be like, man, this is. This sucks.
This sucks.
Yeah. And again, Debo not. Not a viable punt returner in my estimation.
[01:25:47] Speaker B: No. No.
[01:25:47] Speaker A: Which is kind of what they need, honestly. They don't need kick returns. I know who. I think they got options of kick return.
[01:25:52] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:25:53] Speaker A: Start with the running backs, and they can rotate in some other guys. It's the punt returner that I got no earthly idea. And I'm with you. I think Drake Nugent's going to be fantastic back there.
[01:26:02] Speaker B: We got a couple questions towards the top, and I believe one super chat came.
[01:26:08] Speaker A: Fantastic. Let's. Let's do this from PDX Niner.
[01:26:13] Speaker B: Yep.
[01:26:15] Speaker A: Our favorite parasocial relationship is back. That is both me and Jake. Thoughts on Raheem being a better developer of players than Salah?
Do you think with a gray?
I think with a grier.
Oh, we're just. We're just having a question on should you spell gray with an E or an A with gray, position coaches. The D. Oh, there's still. There's still more. The D will grow.
Which I'm glad it cut itself off because I walked right into that one. One bluechew reference and one. The D will grow.
[01:26:51] Speaker B: As a reminder, we are open for sponsorships.
[01:26:54] Speaker A: We are. We are. We don't need it.
We don't need it, but we are open to it.
Raheem is a better developer of talent than Bob.
I have not fundamentally considered the differentiation there.
[01:27:13] Speaker B: I can't give. I can't give, like a very confident answer one way or the other. But it's great question.
I would. My gut feeling is I've seen Raheem do a lot with a little bit of talent in the back end, and I've seen Bob be tremendous with linebackers.
[01:27:31] Speaker A: Exactly.
[01:27:31] Speaker B: So.
[01:27:32] Speaker A: Which I think different strokes, different folks,
[01:27:35] Speaker B: they both cut their teeth in different areas.
[01:27:38] Speaker A: Yeah.
[01:27:38] Speaker B: And I've seen some Raheem defenses with really bad linebackers as well.
[01:27:44] Speaker A: Ain't that the truth?
[01:27:45] Speaker B: Which is why it's nice to have Greenlawn, Fred Warner. Theoretically.
[01:27:49] Speaker A: Theoretically. That's the other thing. I mean, those are guys who maybe, Fred, it was a one year blip, bad accident, or maybe this is the start of something here.
Is it not a contract year for Jair Brown? I'm pretty sure it is a contract year for Jesus.
[01:28:05] Speaker B: It is.
[01:28:06] Speaker A: And I'm sure that he'll be happy to tell us all about it.
[01:28:11] Speaker B: He's a.
He's gonna say he's a top two safety.
Top two safety. And I'm not two.
Yeah, like that.
[01:28:19] Speaker A: You gotta have confidence, you know, you gotta. You gotta believe in what you got going on. I respect it. A super chat from Joe agonizing over the 13th or 14th DL cut like it's 20, 23 all over again. It feels good.
There is a lot of depth to this team. I just don't know if it has much height, like, but they need the depth. They old as hell.
[01:28:38] Speaker B: I do, I do think they are probably being underrated in that I think people are criticizing them for the wrong reasons, like the injury concern and the oldness and some of the questions with like Enrique Cruz and those sort of guys. Those are fair things. But, like, I actually think it's a fairly high floor unless it all goes to hell. Now, McCaffrey is sort of like the linchpin, all that, but again, I'm, I'm pretty high on Kalon Black, and I think you are too.
[01:29:16] Speaker A: I just, I just think that he's a functional NFL back. Like, I just, I don't think there's gonna be any flash. I just Think it's going to be all substance, and it's probably not going to be the most fun to watch. But when you think about the Niners at their best, they had somebody who could run the football in January, and Kalon Black strikes me as a January football runner.
[01:29:43] Speaker B: Give me a second. Give me a second. My girlfriend is watching the Office and is just connected to my AirPods.
So I'm currently here in the Office.
[01:29:51] Speaker A: What episode?
I mean, now we're talking this. Okay, let's go with this. This is from Brad.
Do we have a. A Bowmeester holding scouting report?
[01:30:09] Speaker B: Okay, we're back.
[01:30:10] Speaker A: I don't think so. Are you still listening to the Office? Are you still listening to the Office?
[01:30:15] Speaker B: I'm back. I'm back.
[01:30:16] Speaker A: Bowmeester is a holder.
[01:30:18] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:30:22] Speaker A: What was that? Jake, are you back?
[01:30:24] Speaker B: Maybe he's good as a holder. I haven't. I haven't watched his. His.
[01:30:30] Speaker A: I look forward to training camp where I can give you a very detailed breakdown.
It was a very stone super chat. Not intentional. It's the best kind.
Let's. Let's go here. Sorry. I've been pinning stuff left and right. Here we go. Brock was apparently at Charlie Kohler's wedding.
What are you doing?
[01:30:53] Speaker B: It's. It's. It actually is stupid that they didn't sign it.
I actually, it. I think it's pretty. Pretty dumb.
[01:31:02] Speaker A: He's expensive. I think he made like 9 million
[01:31:05] Speaker B: bucks, but not that expensive. It's. It's like it was only a little bit more than Luke Farrell and that you could have cut Luke Farrell and just gotten Kohler.
[01:31:14] Speaker A: How much of Luke Farrell still being on this team? Is the Niners just trying to kind of freaking out because Kittle got injured in January and it's like, oh, if you cut. If we do the thing where we cut Feral, then we're not going to have any tight ends other than Tonjas, and then we might not be able to get one because the market might go away from us. And, like, let's just stick with what we have.
[01:31:34] Speaker B: I think they went.
They pay. I think top five in tight end spending in the league. And they went, well, if we cut Feral and then we go sign another guy, that's even more money committed to the position. So let's double down on our bet because it's cheaper to do that then go out and sign somebody new.
I think it's dumb.
[01:31:57] Speaker A: I agree.
[01:31:58] Speaker B: I think Feral was bad and Charlie Kohler is good and it was not that much. And you would have. You would have cleared Farrell's money if you waited until after June 1st anyway. Which, oh look, it's July.
[01:32:15] Speaker A: What about his robust free agent market?
You could have post one designated them.
It's not like he used on Brandon Iuk. The Cardinals being in a standoff with their starting quarterback is hilarious. I think you misspelled Carson Beck.
No, Jake hates Carson Beck and is super excited for Christmas Day when Carson Beck is quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals.
[01:32:38] Speaker B: They're going to. He is. It's unfortunate he landed in the desert because there's, you know, you know those no water fish.
You know the chameleons. I'm talking about with their. Anyway, I'm sorry, that's mean.
[01:32:51] Speaker A: Talking about Rango. Johnny Depp Rango.
[01:32:54] Speaker B: I understand that's mean, but I don't like the way he plays football. I don't like his vibe.
[01:33:00] Speaker A: He's got the sidelines figured out. It's everything over the middle. He's Jalen. Hurts just is what it is. Can't. Can't see anything straight ahead.
And ultimately correctly stated from Luis. Man, that conversation went south real quick. Hahaha. We are so very, very back.
[01:33:21] Speaker B: Remember Larry Linguini?
[01:33:24] Speaker A: I also want to say this.
If you've made it this far, you might be sick in the head. That's not what I'm trying to say.
Jake doesn't know about this yet. There's a fantasy college football league that I've created that I will be sending out invites to all members.
And we're just gonna do it. We're just gonna do it. We're gonna take as many people as want if you are currently a member of good standing. So I think that's anything above the minor tier, you'll have the option to come play Yahoo College Fantasy football with us this year. And we'll keep a little track of it, we'll have some fun with it. And it's just gonna be a lot more of the content this year, full stop. I mean, I'll be at training camp damn near every day. You'll be getting something from me every damn day. You and I will.
[01:34:15] Speaker B: Yeah. I'm gonna be updating the website now that it's. It's about that time.
[01:34:19] Speaker A: It is. Yeah.
[01:34:21] Speaker B: We'll have more on that once it's updated.
[01:34:23] Speaker A: But is that damn World cup, you know, it sucked away the summer, but we got Cabo Verde out of it, so a huge win.
[01:34:32] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:34:32] Speaker A: By the way, Argentina get bent.
[01:34:34] Speaker B: It was tough. It was tough because it was. Well, it became not tough because they were so unlikable. Every time I saw Paredes on the field, it was just like this man's. He's like. He would just. He just looked so mad. He was, like, trying to kill someone every time he stepped on the.
[01:34:49] Speaker A: I can't believe a team led by Nicholas Odamendi was a bunch of ne' er do wells.
[01:34:54] Speaker B: It's tough because I was like, it's. I. Like, Messi is just so obviously the greatest, but at a certain point, it became like, I don't care. And also, Spain was kind of meh. But, like, they did. But they were just such a beautiful team. Like, they just played perfect soccer together. It just was like, kind of like,
[01:35:14] Speaker A: all right, except for the whole, like, we don't have a striker thing.
Yeah, they should have won every game, seven to nothing. If I see Rodri make another sideways pass, I'm gonna barf.
[01:35:24] Speaker B: It's okay. His back is shattered.
Back surgery.
[01:35:32] Speaker A: And yet, Man City keeps denying Real Madrid's bids for him. It's like, dude, I get off of that now. But, you know, these are conversations that we can have later on. So, yeah, college fantasy football. I'll be putting.
Putting the league stuff in there, and I believe it's a draft, so start prepping.
I tell.
[01:35:53] Speaker B: It's gonna be insane.
[01:35:54] Speaker A: It's gonna be. We're gonna get a head start. Luckily, I have a database already, so I'm feeling a little bit better about that.
[01:35:59] Speaker B: I'm already. I'm only drafting players from utsa. I don't know what to tell you.
[01:36:05] Speaker A: It's actually only top four major leagues.
[01:36:09] Speaker B: Well, yeah, I'm gonna be. I'm gonna get involved in changing that.
[01:36:13] Speaker A: They don't have those players in the system. They do not have licensing.
[01:36:17] Speaker B: Utsa, baby.
[01:36:19] Speaker A: Okay. Go Roadrunners. I'll be at Cal's media day on the 4th, if that helps at all.
[01:36:25] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. Who's gonna get JKs?
[01:36:28] Speaker A: Yeah.
Not as highly ranked as you would think. Kind of understandably. I do need to figure out the scoring system. I need to get. Get in touch with my man Claude and be like, hey, how do we make this as fun as possible?
[01:36:40] Speaker B: Yeah, there's gonna be some. There's gonna be some player who's just gonna absolutely break the system. But that's okay.
You can have an entire offense. You can just choose an offense.
[01:36:50] Speaker A: You can have an entire offense. So we will have that.
I'm not gonna put a cap on it for now because it's not like we lack teams and players and data by databases. Data by.
To. To do it, but we'll do that. I'll be doing reports from. From training camp. Hopefully Jake will join me. If not, that's okay. We'll be talking about it a couple times. We still hang out with Larry and.
Yeah, that's the thing. It's going to be on all the time now. I mean, you're going to be seeing a hell of a lot of us. And the joys are. If you are a sicko, you might even see more of us than we let on. Just a thought. Just an idea. I say that's a good time to end the stream. Jake, do you want to promote anything before we leave?
[01:37:33] Speaker B: Just, just. If you. If you have someone who runs a cool business and they're looking to throw money somewhere.
[01:37:41] Speaker A: Yeah.
[01:37:42] Speaker B: Let them know we're out there. We're local. We want local Bay Area people. In a weird era where people are promoting a lot of stuff that's kind of whack, we would prefer not to do that.
We.
[01:37:54] Speaker A: We not only prefer not to do it, we have turned down.
Stupid amount of money. Just.
[01:38:03] Speaker B: Oh, all right. We gotta end it there because I see Tom Dundon and I. I can't get started on that.
[01:38:08] Speaker A: Okay, bye.
