[00:00:00] Speaker A: I'm Dieter. That's Hutch. We're in parts unknown. Don't ask. At 49ers rookie minicamp, I don't think we learned a lot, if I'm being honest. Jake. [00:00:08] Speaker B: No, but it was nice out. It was nice out. And I will say, there's something special that happens when you imagine a person gets drafted and you're like, chris Kasurek's gonna have fun with that. And then you have fun watching Chris Kasurek watch that person. [00:00:21] Speaker A: That's true. [00:00:22] Speaker B: We're talking about one Grayson Halton. But more importantly, Romello Height. [00:00:27] Speaker A: Yeah. Clearly the standout of whatever could stand out on a day like today. That boy different. [00:00:33] Speaker B: It was. Let's be clear, it was the giant ring. The giant ring hula hoop figure eight drill, where you, like, bend and drop the towel. And you could literally hear everyone else watching it, getting, like, losing it. [00:00:47] Speaker A: They're like, ooh, John lynch was holding himself back. [00:00:50] Speaker B: Cause everybody else is sort of, like, going as fast as they can, but they're moving like a human. It's hard to maintain speed while bending. [00:00:57] Speaker A: That's why they do the drill. [00:00:57] Speaker B: And Romello Heights, like, hitting, like, almost like a jump step. Like, he's doing. He's almost doing. Hitting a cross chop as he does it to bend down. It's. [00:01:06] Speaker A: There's one other guy who I've seen do it like that. He wears 97 for this team. Yeah. [00:01:11] Speaker B: I mean, listen, there's a reason, like, we were excited about him. Like, he's. [00:01:16] Speaker A: He's very good. [00:01:17] Speaker B: And I told. I told Dieter this a couple times. But, like, when I was first watching Texas Tech and it was him and David Bailey, I was like. I was like, I don't know. Like, he's pretty sweet, but he seems a little light to go number two overall because I literally. I got them mixed up because Romello Height was flying off the tape. And it was, like, sort of a mediocre game for David Bailey. But, like, that was my first impression. [00:01:40] Speaker A: Yeah, there really wasn't that much different between them. And we watched, you know, just like John lynch, just like anybody else who was part of this draft process, we watched a lot of tech defense, and that really, I mean, yes, Bailey is the better prospect. He wasn't markedly the better prospect. And it's interesting how hype can sometimes get involved in this process. And just you talk David Bailey for so long, then it sort of becomes a confirmation bias collectively. Whereas Romello height, I'll tell you this, too. He definitely is of smaller frame. But he's tall. Yeah. And long. [00:02:14] Speaker B: Long. His arms aren't that long, which is an interesting build. [00:02:17] Speaker A: It is. But there's. There's some Leonard Floyd there without the super long arms. [00:02:21] Speaker B: Yeah. He's just like. There' such a level of crazy speed and burst off the ball that even I think it's going to pose problems regardless of what he does in the run game, where he's probably going to get ragdolled quite a bit. [00:02:37] Speaker A: I don't know if he'll be out there for run game. [00:02:39] Speaker B: It's. Yeah. I mean, it's going to be. Yeah, I don't think he should be out there for run game, but like, I think he's going to take guys off guard because there's a. He moves differently. [00:02:49] Speaker A: Totally. And listen, you're replacing Bryce Huff, who doesn't have that kind of explosion. Didn't have that kind of size. [00:02:57] Speaker B: He did. He. I mean, he was explosive. [00:02:59] Speaker A: He was inherently explosive. That was his job. It didn't look like that. [00:03:03] Speaker B: Yeah, I think it looked at times like that in his career. But like, they asked a lot of him last year and it started to wane. [00:03:08] Speaker A: But Huff held up better against the run than I think he'd got credit. [00:03:11] Speaker B: I agree. Especially last year. [00:03:13] Speaker A: Right. [00:03:13] Speaker B: And then he went, I'm done. [00:03:15] Speaker A: This whole going against the run thing, not for me. It's over now. And we wish Bryce the best of luck in his next adventure. Which is like batteries legitimately. [00:03:24] Speaker B: Yeah. I like, I like the part where they. They had him on all the shows and it's just him talking about like battery technology and firefighters and I don't know what it is, but he's talking about that for like eight minutes. I'm like, is this good content for you guys? Like, it's great for Bryce. Yeah. And it sounds like an interesting, like, actually well thought out business venture, but it's not great television, I'll give you that. [00:03:46] Speaker A: Okay. Two things of note, I guess, if we had to come through some notes here. Jarrett Brown, who is on a Tryout from South Carolina, 510 receiver, and will Pauling were catching punts today. Also, Jake noted no Junior Bergen. Not going to bring Junior Bergen to this rookie camp as a practice squad guy. [00:04:05] Speaker B: Strange. I don't know what happened to them. Who told that he's supposed to be on the roster. [00:04:09] Speaker A: He's still on the roster. I mean, he was on the roster when I last checked. Maybe something's changed. I think they would have had to send out a release of some sort. [00:04:15] Speaker B: But Pauline who's like, all right. Well, that's why when ranked the UDFAs, I was like, well, if he's not catching punts, I don't know what he does here. [00:04:21] Speaker A: Right? [00:04:21] Speaker B: He's catching punts. [00:04:22] Speaker A: He's catching punts now. I won't. They did have a very weird setup today where it's like, no, no. You can't actually lay eyes on the skinny boys. Right. The big ones, which. Listen. [00:04:32] Speaker B: Yeah, I didn't get to. I mean, that's what happens anyway. We. We end up never watching. I mean, we watch, like, a little bit of the wide receivers and DBs, but usually you're in a bad position. You can't really see anyway. I didn't see any of Dijon stribling. [00:04:44] Speaker A: I saw him, like, a very. Let him run routes. [00:04:48] Speaker B: Yeah, he was, like, 10 yards off and just jogging. [00:04:50] Speaker A: He was a ghetto route. [00:04:51] Speaker B: Again, you can't do that much in these. [00:04:53] Speaker A: It was sevens. It was sevens at most. [00:04:56] Speaker B: It's mostly to teach guys the drills that they're gonna have to do, because that's a funny thing is, like, you see where guys are, like. I don't. What is. I don't know the drill. [00:05:04] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:05:05] Speaker B: Like. Say that again, Coach. [00:05:06] Speaker A: No, Even, like, the stretch in the warmup, you could just feel the tension of all of these young players being, like, really intently listening. [00:05:14] Speaker B: Yeah. You're like, what? Well, okay. Usually, like, see, guys. [00:05:16] Speaker A: What do you mean? High knees. Now, that's not how we did it. [00:05:18] Speaker B: How high are you going with the high knees? [00:05:20] Speaker A: Yeah. Some guys were getting off the line early, and it was just kind of a. It was a hot mess. [00:05:24] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:05:25] Speaker A: So Pauling. Pauling is in on the punt returner situation. I didn't see, actually, Jack Boatmeester at all punt. [00:05:32] Speaker B: I did not. I did not. He was there, but I did not see him punt. [00:05:36] Speaker A: We saw Curtis Rourke throw couple. [00:05:38] Speaker B: Couple good ones. Not too much to take away. [00:05:41] Speaker A: I wouldn't be like, hey, look at Mac Jones. [00:05:43] Speaker B: But Jaden Duggar certainly moves well physically. [00:05:48] Speaker A: Wild to look at. [00:05:50] Speaker B: He's very long. He's not, like, height where he's got short arms. His arms are, like, frighteningly long. Would you say, like, the slim reaper? [00:05:58] Speaker A: Yeah. He's got a basketball player's body. [00:06:01] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:06:02] Speaker A: My other. [00:06:03] Speaker B: My other. [00:06:03] Speaker A: There were two guys that felt miscast in their roles. One was James Thompson, the who had. Very nice day. Very nice day. [00:06:12] Speaker B: If it clicks, there's something real there. [00:06:15] Speaker A: There's really heavy hands. And what is he listed at here? 6 foot 6, 308. [00:06:20] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:06:21] Speaker A: I can't believe that no one in his life told him, you need to be playing left tackle. [00:06:25] Speaker B: Right? [00:06:26] Speaker A: Like. [00:06:26] Speaker B: Yeah, I know. He look. He does look like. [00:06:28] Speaker A: He looks exactly like Brandon Parker. [00:06:30] Speaker B: Yeah, it is strange because it's just like he's going to have to fight pad level the whole time. [00:06:35] Speaker A: And he's got. He's got really heavy hands. [00:06:37] Speaker B: Athletic, too. [00:06:38] Speaker A: Pops out of his stance. The footwork is really good in close quarters. I'm like, that's a tackle. I don't. Not a defense. That's an offensive tackle. But he played very well at defensive tackle. It's probably a lot funner to be a defensive tackle, but I just can't. I actually need to hunt down James Thompson. Did anyone tell you you should be playing offensive tackle, that you showed up at the wrong day and you always looked a little line on the O? [00:07:00] Speaker B: Looks more like an offensive tackle than the people the 49ers draft play offense, [00:07:04] Speaker A: which are just guards. Let's talk the offensive line. Okay. Carver Willis is a center. [00:07:12] Speaker B: I think he could play guard. [00:07:14] Speaker A: I think his footwork is too gliding. [00:07:19] Speaker B: I think it's. [00:07:20] Speaker A: It's good. [00:07:21] Speaker B: We expected. He can move. He can move. And again, this is with no pads on. Mover, you're just trying to get a sense. But like the initial, like, pop that I thought the 49ers needed, and why I was, like, particularly critical is I don't see that, like, first step right off the line, low power. Like, I think pad level, getting up and under guys in that first step could be an issue for him. Again, we're gonna have to see in training camp and as the season goes. But, like, first impression is like, he can glide and get out in space and move, but we'll see how it is in the immediate first step. Short area. [00:08:03] Speaker A: So again, a center, like, he's. He's an angles man. He's. He's playing trigonometry out there, and that's fine. You can make. Have a long NFL career doing that. If you're at center or if you're a backup guard, you can maybe get away with it a little bit at left tackle more than right. But that's maybe too deep in the weeds and very specific to this system. Meanwhile, Enrique Cruz, you're a big fan. Yeah. Very rarely do you see somebody who is taking up divots as they run moving that fast. [00:08:36] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:08:36] Speaker A: So they're heavy steps and yet he's moving crazy fast. [00:08:40] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:08:41] Speaker A: That's a fun combination for an offensive lineman. He. [00:08:44] Speaker B: I don't totally know what to make of him yet. [00:08:46] Speaker A: I really kind of think they do either. [00:08:48] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:08:48] Speaker A: But when you see again like plotting really fast, like sub 5, 40 yard dash. But every. But the grass is being lifted up off the ground like it's a golf tournament. The driving range. [00:09:00] Speaker B: Yeah. Like there's feels like more of a low heft to him. Like he feels definitely like potential tackle. [00:09:07] Speaker A: Totally good anchor. [00:09:09] Speaker B: Willis feels like no chance. He's a tackle to me. Like could. It could in a pinch, but doesn't feel like a tackle. Short arms and I don't know. He does it. [00:09:17] Speaker A: He does an Austin Pleasant's tackle. [00:09:20] Speaker B: Yeah. But Pleasance is like a stiff, heavier guy crew. [00:09:25] Speaker A: But like again, just get him. That's a pulling. [00:09:27] Speaker B: Sure. [00:09:28] Speaker A: It's an outside stretch zone tackle. They don't run that stuff as much anymore. [00:09:33] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:09:33] Speaker A: Now maybe they will in the future. But like Cruz is. [00:09:36] Speaker B: Is very interesting. Like I, I don't know what he's gonna be or what he is even right now. And like you said, I don't think they know. Yeah, but he's gonna be fun to watch in training camp. [00:09:47] Speaker A: There's some pop in. There's some pop in the hands. He can get low. [00:09:51] Speaker B: Yes. [00:09:51] Speaker A: He's stumpier than it looked on film. Again, just grab. Just throwing up seedlings. Every time he moves and he's moving, he moving. And then the other thing too with him is like, [00:10:09] Speaker B: I. [00:10:11] Speaker A: He just never played consistently in college. I feel like he might be stuck in this thing of like, oh, yeah, this should work. And then the coaches actually have him play football and they're like, it doesn't really work, but maybe, maybe this next [00:10:21] Speaker B: rep just theoretical player. [00:10:24] Speaker A: It might be a theory only, but it's a seventh round pick. I don't mind a theory when there's that much obvious. And you know what round pick. Oh, Jesus, you're right. And like in the same sense, like, I got to loosen my opinion on Duggar a little bit. The tape is awful. Okay. We were going off the tape. You see him in person and you go like, I'm willing to roll the dice. Not where they took them. [00:10:47] Speaker B: I like the, the bet on the traits. I think the tape is. It's like it feels like you went and combed RAS and went, ooh, how about this guy? And then just went, well, it's a great RAS score. Yeah. [00:11:04] Speaker A: And just sort by leadership skills, that's [00:11:06] Speaker B: what it felt like because the tape's awful. I have no idea if it will work or what his position is. Or what he is. [00:11:13] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:11:13] Speaker B: But I'm intrigued to find out. It'd be fun if it works out. [00:11:18] Speaker A: Well. Brant Boyer did a presser yesterday. Fascinating press conferences with Brant Boyer all the time. We truly underrate how interesting special teams press conferences are. Hightower was just comedy for years. I think it's going great. No, it isn't. It's just not going great at all. [00:11:36] Speaker B: When Brian Schneider's like, we're trying to figure it out. [00:11:40] Speaker A: Special teams is an abstract art. I went to the Grateful Dead concert at the Sphere to feel the special teams. Duggar, if he. Duggar's career will be defined by how quickly and effectively he takes to special teams. Because if there is one thing that man was put on the planet to do at the very baseline, it's play special teams in the NFL, it's run [00:12:03] Speaker B: fast and use your long limbs to tackle people. [00:12:06] Speaker A: Yeah. If he can't. If he can't play teams, he can't play. [00:12:10] Speaker B: I don't know if he has the aggression for it, which I think we'll find out pretty quick. [00:12:14] Speaker A: But, like, I almost. I almost. I think that it might be better to just start viewing him not as K.J. wright's pick, even though he was, but rather as Brant Boyer's pick. Because if you were just going to take, like, totally a provisional special teams possibility, like, I'd be like, just get me the RAS score guy. [00:12:30] Speaker B: Yeah, I agree with that. Another. Another guy who I really am intrigued to see, Khalil Dinkins, because there's a. There's a little something there. I just have no idea when the pads come on because I did not like him in line, but out in space, he's got long limbs, a lot of, like, functional reps. I just think he's gonna kind of get torched as an inline blocker, but we'll see. [00:12:51] Speaker A: But, like, they need an inline blocker. [00:12:53] Speaker B: It's tough to know what he is, but there's. There's a lot in terms of frame, in terms of movement, that's really intriguing. [00:13:00] Speaker A: I saw him do a seven yard out route and you're like, oh, like legitimately, like, eyebrow raising, like, that was pretty good cut. And then you watch him kind of on, you know, some. Some zag routes and stuff, and you're like, it's a little. [00:13:12] Speaker B: I don't know, but he has. [00:13:13] Speaker A: He has sneaky long arms. He had a nice catch going up on kind of a post route, and he really extended and got it and it was a good catch. I don't think that he has any separation skills unless he's a really crisp hiding them. I mean today was not the day you're going to find out. But let me just say this. Like we joked about it before, before we came out here. Like when we talk about just disqualification, like, okay, so a guy named TJ Guy disqualified himself today. Seems like a nice kid. I can see why they brought him into camp. There's just not enough pop for him to be that light. It just, it's not, that's not going to work. And he might hang around for a while yet. Might be the guy that they bring in if a couple guys get injured. But like TJ Guy is not an NFL player. Like I apologize to TJ Guy, but like he's not an NFL player. This is an easy thing to exercise to do. Khalil Dinkins didn't disqualify himself in the same way like a Mason Pline did a year ago. Right. When you're like, nope. Within seconds you're like, nope, not it. [00:14:14] Speaker B: I think that's fair. [00:14:14] Speaker A: One guy Mason plan back. [00:14:16] Speaker B: He's just here. I don't know why. Along with a couple guys that I'm not sure really exist. Mikhail Camara, underwhelmed. Which is kind of what I expected as a tweener. Yeah. He's just like. And I compared him to Ronald Blair and then I watched him get coached up by Ronald Blair. And you're like, you guys are the same height and it's, there's a little something uncanny valley there where it's like he's just going to have to be like a gritty, hard working guy. [00:14:43] Speaker A: Another teams guy. [00:14:45] Speaker B: Totally. [00:14:45] Speaker A: He had a block punt in the, in the national championship game. [00:14:48] Speaker B: I think that's his route. [00:14:49] Speaker A: It's just like Nettie guys good. [00:14:51] Speaker B: You're like, you're like, we're going to call him up from the practice squad six times a year just because he's good on special teams and because he works hard and we need an extra body. [00:15:00] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:15:00] Speaker B: And he's going to at least not get thrown to the ground. But he's also not going to make any plays. [00:15:06] Speaker A: He's a four eye though. [00:15:07] Speaker B: You really liked, I believe it was your whiskey. No, your Mizzou guy. [00:15:10] Speaker A: My Mizzou guy. It's hard to get it. I mean, right, like we're padless offensive [00:15:16] Speaker B: line play, low center of gravity. Yeah. [00:15:19] Speaker A: He moved really well. I also, you know what? Legitimately the guy that I kind of Quincy Hughes out of Wofford. I kept watching him and I'M like, this guy's pretty good. Guy's moving pretty good. None of them rose to the level of like, the Nuge, who by the way, like, has been lifting pretty significantly. He's looking kind of cut. [00:15:38] Speaker B: He looks like a bowling ball. [00:15:39] Speaker A: He's a bowling ball of a man. He's a special specimen. [00:15:42] Speaker B: I would just like to see him play in one NFL game just to see it. [00:15:44] Speaker A: I think again, have no inside info here, but, like, I would think that he needed to bulk up so that he can reasonably play guard. And I think that maybe he has. He looked more guarded. [00:15:54] Speaker B: I mean, Chris Frster has always been deeply in love with him. [00:15:57] Speaker A: What's not to love? [00:15:58] Speaker B: I mean, as are we. It's just. [00:16:00] Speaker A: We get it. [00:16:00] Speaker B: He's a specimen. And he's one of those, a little bit like Kamara, where you're like, well, you just gotta keep him around. Cause he works hard and he kinda. He should be worse than he is. And he's not. It's sort of like what I think Foerster said last year about him. [00:16:13] Speaker A: It's one of those things where if you let him leave the building and he turns out somewhere else, you're gonna be kicking yourself forever. Even if it's just a dude who makes a team. [00:16:20] Speaker B: Totally. [00:16:21] Speaker A: You know, there'll be other teams that, by the way, like, have lower standards because they're worse. So you have to keep them around because when the. There will be a moment when you need that third center or fourth guard, and you're going to be like, remember [00:16:35] Speaker B: when we let the newspaper, like, what are we doing? Two other guys to talk about Bryson Eason. Him and like Grayson Halton were sort [00:16:43] Speaker A: of hard to tell the difference. [00:16:44] Speaker B: Yeah, they're both. Eason is a bigger ass. He's dump. He is dumpier. [00:16:51] Speaker A: I like them both. [00:16:52] Speaker B: I do too. And I think Chris Firster does as well. [00:16:55] Speaker A: I think they got four. Chris Casser. [00:16:57] Speaker B: They got there. Halton, Eason, Thompson and height. [00:17:01] Speaker A: Yeah. Then Camara as the fifth there. Yeah, maybe. [00:17:05] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:17:05] Speaker A: And again, I just don't think you let him leave the building. I don't think that he. I don't think he and his agent did a very good job here because that man is a 4 I if I've ever seen one. And it's like, just go to a team that runs a tight front, which he might. [00:17:18] Speaker B: Yeah. Who knows how they'll use him. But Thompson's going to be really intriguing. It might be nothing. Like, he might truly be nothing. It might not work out 100%. But it might be something. [00:17:27] Speaker A: First rep we see Chris. Chris Kucerek is just. God damn. That was like. He was into it and you're like. And you saw the rep and you're good. The issue is he doesn't have any pass rush moves. Very straightforward, and he doesn't have big shoulders. So it's kind of. Again, the man is playing the wrong position. [00:17:45] Speaker B: I agree with you. I agree with you. [00:17:46] Speaker A: Imagine. You know, actually, you know what? I have been making this. We've been workshopping this. I'm going all in now. I think Cruz could be a really good six offensive lineman. And frankly, I think that's what he's best built for because he's so fast that you can maybe throw him the ball. What about Thompson as the sixth offensive lineman? [00:18:05] Speaker B: The seventh offense. [00:18:06] Speaker A: That's what I'm saying. Like, now we're getting in maybe Larry territory where everybody's the next fullback. Or you can just play. You can just play stribling at tight end. But like, I'm telling. I don't know with Tom, like, Thompson as. [00:18:18] Speaker B: He's a good. He's a really good athlete, too. There's something there. [00:18:21] Speaker A: There's something there. [00:18:22] Speaker B: Last thing, I think Ephesians pry. Sock didn't really see him do anything, [00:18:27] Speaker A: but that boy's skinny. [00:18:29] Speaker B: Certainly long and skinny. [00:18:30] Speaker A: I had one note. I had one note, like, written down outside of this sheet, which is a boy. Is he tall? Yeah. Cool. [00:18:37] Speaker B: That's about it. [00:18:38] Speaker A: I mean, I think there's some real Akela Witherspoon there. [00:18:41] Speaker B: Yeah. And it's like, I don't know. [00:18:43] Speaker A: Kelly Witherspoon still has a job. [00:18:44] Speaker B: He's very grabby. [00:18:45] Speaker A: He's very grabby. [00:18:46] Speaker B: And there are. Sometimes you see it in college, and then other times you're like, can you stop tugging a jersey the second the play starts? I'm not sure. The answer is yes. [00:18:55] Speaker A: I didn't get any eyes on Jalen Stroman, which is disappointing. [00:18:58] Speaker B: Yeah, it's tough with safeties, and the view we had was not great for that. [00:19:03] Speaker A: I did see Juice Chestnut. That guy is not 5 foot 10. I don't know how to put this nicely. Yep, he's closer to five, six than he is 510. [00:19:13] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:19:15] Speaker A: So I don't think you can play safety. [00:19:16] Speaker B: We saw Kalon Black for about two seconds in a little scrum. [00:19:19] Speaker A: Seems like a nice enough kid. [00:19:21] Speaker B: Seems. [00:19:21] Speaker A: Actually, they're not kids. They're all like 25 years old. [00:19:24] Speaker B: But I'm excited to be closer in age. [00:19:26] Speaker A: To Jake than I am in age. To Jake. [00:19:29] Speaker B: It's a scary proposition. [00:19:30] Speaker A: I don't like that. It just. [00:19:31] Speaker B: No one does. [00:19:32] Speaker A: Yeah, Derek Canteen out there. [00:19:36] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:19:36] Speaker A: Derek Canteen has been on this team for four years. He's only listed as having one year of experience. [00:19:41] Speaker B: Yeah, no, I. [00:19:42] Speaker A: He's always been. [00:19:43] Speaker B: I had the same. I had the same thought where last year they said he was a rookie. And I was like, what are you talking about? [00:19:47] Speaker A: That man's been here since the stadium. [00:19:50] Speaker B: He's a rookie. Like, that is the most. [00:19:52] Speaker A: He's 37 years old. [00:19:54] Speaker B: Derek Canteen is the most. Dante Johnson esque, like, adjacent name where you're like, he's all. He's always been here. He's always been on the practice squad. Yeah, I'm. I've never. I really couldn't tell you who he is, but he's always been here. [00:20:08] Speaker A: What about Hudson Habermeel? [00:20:10] Speaker B: There were. There was Heinrich Harberg and Hudson Habermill, who were both tight ends. And I went, can we be serious for a second? [00:20:18] Speaker A: Heinrich Harburgh out of Nebraska, bearing the [00:20:20] Speaker B: number 41 and the number 46. [00:20:23] Speaker A: Hudson Havermill had a little bit of scoot to him. Six foot six, 250 out of UCLA, 25 years old. [00:20:29] Speaker B: Why not? I think we're done here. [00:20:32] Speaker A: Indeed we are. We'll talk to you next week.
